Firearms

Do you take them on the road with you? Why? Why not? Do you keep them in your Airstream? TV? Take them into National or State Parks? I've got a long trip coming up and I plan on bringing mine, for those low frequency but high risk situations...

That's not the real question. The correct question is how many minutes will it take for this thread to be locked or deleted.
Come, you know you have already made your decision, so what diff does it make what anybody else does ?

OMG.... not again? Sorry, I could not resist. Search for a post called 'Protection on the road from ruffians', a lot of reading there. You will be very entertained.

A "loaded" question, the only subject that gets nuttier than hitches and tow vehicles.

I would strongly suggest that you read this thread... all 13 pages of it.

I am leaving this open for the time being.

I will read that. Sorry gmw, I didn't realize that utilizing a discussion forum to ask about firearms is inappropriate or grounds for having a thread shut down. I guess more important items such as wear to place your spare key should be higher on the priority list.

This is an issue that has been discussed here on the Forums a number of times in the past. It always seems to end in a political debate that results in an abrupt end to the thread by the Forum Moderators.

That being said, I am of the belief that these matters are best decided by each person, acted on accordingly, and kept to oneself.

As Moosetags wrote, the issue is about the direction threads on this topic take rather than the specific topic.

Depending on the part of the country you are from and political leanings it fast becomes a hot under the collar subject. Airforums wants to remain neutral, and friendly.

I generally do not take a firearm when I travel on a caravan. One reason is that we go to Canada fairly often and that makes difficult taking a gun for the entire trip. Another reason for me not carrying a handgun in the trailer is that I am actually more afraid of the various gun laws and zealous law enforcement than I am of the bad guys.
But to the original question. When I do take a firearm, and now is one of those times, I keep it in a soft case either in the hall closet when parked for a while or under the bed when traveling. Or in the drawer I made for guns and fishing tackle in the back of the truck.
I do not see anything wrong with your original question.

I agree that on international trips it would be a headache.

At least trailer manufactures have a set of federal regulations to follow that trump any state laws. There are as many different firearm laws as there are states, cities and towns and I have no time or interest to learn all of them. I would look like a chameleon on a plaid shirt....

It's too bad Airforums doesn't have a "Firearms" or "Hunting" subforum.

Camping and shooting.
My two favorite pastimes.

To answer OP's question: yes, I always carry.
It's a good idea to know the laws from state to state.
usacarry.com has a great interactive map to check reciprocity between states for CPL's

I find my fellow campers to be generally a friendly, peaceful folk. Unless backwood camping in grizzly country, I can't really see the need for a firearm.

Uggh,
I read a couple of pages on the link provided by WahooNC.
Kind of creeps me out the way some people think.
I guess it's like those people who go watch hunting videos on youtube and then complain about the hunters. Do they enjoy being outraged so they watch the videos?
I don't know why they would go there.

Wut?

I can neither confirm, nor deny, any such instances which may, or may not have, occured. Nor do I have any recollection of such.

If you cannot carry a cop carry a gun. But take all the training available and secure under lock and key when not on your possession. When isolated (boondocking) is when you might be most targetable.

In my previous trailer I had a small gun safe, used to secure valuables. I assume if you do carry a firearm you have been trained and practice often.

If you are thoughtful in your choice of camping areas your biggest risk would be a break down on the side of the road.

I only carry a gun while traveling. It saved our lives a couple years ago just north of Birmingham. A guy got mad because he passed me on the right while I was making a lane change with a trailer. He proceeded to pass me on the left then got in front of me and slammed on his brakes. We almost ran over him. We are lucky the 5x8 cargo trailer we were towing did not jack knife. He keep messing with us till I got my gun out. I guess he wanted me to pull over so he could attack me and my family. This was a traumatic experience for all of us. It seems like all my problems happen just north of Birmingham. I think it is like the Bermuda Triangle of bad drivers and bad roads and sometimes combined with bad weather.

Make sure you know the rules of the state you are in. Many states in the south have agreements with other states that make carry permits legal in other states.

What is to be gained by this thread?
If the majority of responders don't pack while camping that'll sway the poster?
For Pete's sake,....
Here's a thought,...
Go to a Winchester or Glock site and ask if they carry campers with their guns?
