FiRe, FiRe, FIRE, in the AiRsTrEaM!!!!

Well, now what???? I have no Idea what started It. The only things in the spot where I started was one Mag-lite and two Lite-box flashlights all are rechargable. The fire put its self out after running out or oxygen!!! I was able to make the 140 plus mile trip back to the house with the trail in tow!!!

Dude, that is bad....

And I thought you had it bad when the trailer was bent a few months ago from that crazy-out-run-the-storm in the field senario...

Hold out for a good settlement...

Good luck.

Bummer about the fire. Looks like it could've been a lot worse. That trailer is well sealed to run out of oxygen—makes me wonder about how long it would take a human or two to run out of O2?

Were the flashlight batteries being charged at the time of the fire? Did they have the lithium (I think it's lithium plus something else) batteries that have been know to spontaneously catch fire?

I'd be inclined to get an airstream shop to look at that before you let them total it. Very well could be but also the smoke damage seems to far out do the heat damage. Did it affect the outside skin at all?

Polished? So is this your '73 31' Sovereign? Did heat affect the outside skin? How about the floor? Negative answers to both of those would simplify repairs. Be sure and keep the inner skin intact -- or keep for templates. A buyback would really depend on the economics of who will be doing the restoration. It could get uneconomical quickly if you hired that out; ie, you could spend as much as an undamaged unit could be bought for today. This all depends on doing thorough research before you jump.

Uh, yeah! What was in that area?

A totaled vehicle has a salvage title and this strongly impacts resale, right?

The Airstream used market seems to be "what the market will bear." So many restoration jobs exist needing what yours will need. Ruined plastic veneers won't be easy or cheap to replace while keeping weight down. This unit maybe could be used by you for years and sold at a relatively equivalent value? I hear you saying there is no frame or running gear damage.

I was hoping otherwise as there would be potential liability there. Nonetheless, is there any history of fires with these units?—two of them too close together arcing perhaps. Assuming there's a deductible on your insurance, you want someone to make a claim against for that.

AFter looking at the pictures, I don't think it was a standard fire. I am thinking something like a road flare. The reason I am thinking that is the fact that the light cover melted (you can see it hanging alsmost completely gone in pic #1), but the plastic end cap isn't melted. Also since the light cover melted, the vent cover should have melted and given it an air supply. Since the melt is so directional, it makes me think the fire was a single jet as opposed to a standard flame. This is just my opinion.

@tschat...the endcaps are fiberglass not plastic. They are very thin, hence the sagging. If I had to hazard a guess I would want to see the wiring inside the wall at that point and see if a wire had shorted against a rib. There is a fair number of wires in the wall near where the fire started.
