We have used Watkins Glen as a base for visiting the area several times. The State Park at Watkins Glen is excellent but I don't think we could get our present 31' trailer in there.

We have stopped several times here .........

Clute Park Campground | Watkins Glen, NY

It is not as attractive as the State Park, but has several advantages ...........

- Nice flat open sites, easy to negotiate and full hookups.

- Downtown adjacent to a marina and pretty much right on the lake / beach

- easy walk to the main street and close to a wallyfworld (!)

We find Watkins Glen to be a nice ventral spot to stay to visit other locations such as Corning, Ithaca, Hammdnsport, wineries, etc.

If you have not been there before, the actual "Glen" a steep canyon like configuration that has something like 20 or more waterfalls within a nicely kept mile or so long trail, is well worth a visit and a bit of a hike, Not too strenuous and stone steps where needed.

The Glen terminates at the top of the main street in Watkins Glen (other end from the lake). Pay parking about $4 or walk in free!

If you can get into the State Park with your trailer it is right at the top end of the Glen.

Cowanesque Lake Corp of Engineers Park

Located south of Corning, NY, just across the PA state line is Cowanesque Lake Corp of Engineers Park with a wonderful campground. Some sites are full hookup, others on the lakeshore are water/electric only. Sites are paved and reasonably large. Some are shaded, others more open. The only issue was the lack of cell service (Verizon).

We spent a long weekend here

Taughannock Falls State Park - NYS Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation

The park's small but it's central to the region and the scenery is great. I loved the town of Ithaca, a lovely University town and named for the Greek Island I spent a happy week on many years ago.

We stayed at the Robert H. Treman State Park, just to the SW of Ithaca, and loved it.

Never been to Sampson State Park Geneva, NY but would like to hear about it. Did go through Air Force Basic Military Training there in July 1954. Remember it was real cold there in October from the wind & rain off the Finger Lakes. Mac

Got great review from friends who have been to Letchworth SP. Great hiking trails and close to area attractions. Not the Grand Canyon but the Genesee river gorge is spectacular none the less.

I am at Watkins Glen right now. It's a lovely place, with tall trees shading the sites. Weekends were difficult to get sites. I should have booked when I first looked! I was also thinking of boondocking at a winery. I wrote to Prejean Winery, and they have RV parking and allow overnight parking. That's on the west side of Seneca Lake. I didn't go there, though. Plans changed.
I am spending the weekend at Newtown Battlefield State Park which is near Elmira.

I'll second this one! We spent a week there in the summers of 2013 and 2014 while our kids were at a Cornell University summer camp. It's 15-20 minutes from Ithaca where there's lots to do, and there's nice hiking in the park. Taughannock Falls has sites with electricity.

Sampson State Park is also nice.

I would second the recommendation for Letchworth State Park. The Finger Lakes region of NY is a vast area and there is a tremendous amount of things to see and do. I went to school in Ithaca and weekend wine tasting trips were very much in vogue, still are! Don't miss Watkins Glen if you have a chance and camp close by. Have fun, and thanks for coming to our beautiful part of the country.

Cheerful Valley RV Park in Geneva, NY was very nice. Letchworth SP was great too. We stayed at both parks in August.
