Ferry question to Ocracoke

We have been to Ocracoke several times but have not taken the Airstream yet. I am curious from folks who have done it, is there a problem with the ramp on'off the ferry at different tide levels which would cause the rear of the rig to drag?

I haven't done it, though we've taken the ferry to Ocracoke. There must be many, many people with RV's using those ferries, so I can't imagine they haven't taken that into account. You could travel between high and low tides to minimize any potential problems. Call the North Carolina ferry people and ask them; they should know answers.

We did see a Class C MH get stuck at the ferry crossing the MacKenzie R. in the NWT, but the road there is just dirt going into the river and steep, so it doesn't compare with most car ferries.

I don't know anything about Ocracoke, even where it is. Sounds like some kind of green soda to me.

But, there is a page or 2 in "The Long, Long Trailer" that describes that delema. In that case the ferry crew had planks and blocks to get the clearance so the butt did not drag. It may also be possible to have a crew member who has experience manuevering trailers load and unload the rig. I'd call up the ferry folk and ask them.

being an east coaster I doubt the tides are high enough here to cause any real problems for you. Tractor trailers cross al the time as to lowboy construction trailers. Go for it, what is the worst that can happen you have to wait fro the next one...

We've done it twice and there is no problem -- the tidal range isn't all that great and the folks running the ferries have seen and done it all. You just fold in your towing mirrors and do exactly waht the loadmaster signals. Then you sit in your "private cabin" and watch the world go by. Very deluxe.

The Ocracoke campground (part of the Hatteras National Seashore) is very nice -- it is dry camping but there is fresh water and a dump station. Short hike to the beach.

Lots of really nice folks.
Just take it nice and easy and remember that you're on island time.
