Great topic! Looking forward to hearing more! Most of our trips aren’t long enough for these but someday - when we retire - a nice list of great audio books would be a pleasure to take with us!

Gotta sign up for this thread. Sometimes I do a lot of driving solo since my wife is still working.

We just finished Ken Follett’s The Fall of Giants which was beautifully and entertainingly read. It’s a sweeping historical fiction leading up and into the end of the First World War.

I find it hard to do books while driving. If we are in urban environments where I have to put most of my dwindling mental facilities into driving decisions I miss bits and parts. If we are driving through the hinterlands my wife falls asleep. So we end up asking each other, “How did that happen?” Or “Now who is that?” Then we restart the chapter to figure out what’s going on. Maybe that’s just us.

Me too!
When I drove across the country, nothing was better than books on tape. Times have changed, I'm not sure what the format is now, maybe podcasts, but back in the 2000's I'd clean out the public library. One of my favorites was Garrison Keillor. Great story teller.
Otherwise, I liked mysteries, and some Dean Koontz.
I'd get so transfixed I'd hate stopping for fuel because I didn't want to interrupt the storyline. Before I knew it, 600 miles had slipped by.

Gotta raise the issue of Distracted Driving [DD] from this, among many other sources. The older we get, the more we notice DD IMO.

https://www.google.com/search?client...71.8EuvJNmghXg
https://www.foxbusiness.com/features...racted-driving
https://www.quora.com/How-dangerous-...g-an-audiobook

FYI and FWIW -- need to consider the risks IMO.

Happy trails,

Peter

Books on tape kept me stimulated. I didn't talk, look away, or get bored.

You could remove all the distractions and fall asleep.

I commute 60 miles to/fro work and have listened to books for years. It is has saved my sanity in bump to bumper rush hour traffic. If I find myself "distracted" by the book, I stop it until traffic lets me listen again.
For long trips I often turn to the classics. The Count of Monte Christo is always a good listen. Any Jane Austin if my husband isn't around. If he it, Sandra Browns books are good.
John Steinbecks Travels with Charlie is a lovely listen when on the road.
But honestly, I'll listen to anything. It's a treat to have someone read to me.

Tony Hillerman books are great when traveling in the four corners area. They have lots of detail on culture and geography.

Audio Books

We use Audible and like Nelson DeMille, author of The Gold Coast, The Cuban affair and others and our all time favorite author is the late, Pat Conroy, All of his books are worth listening too, Beach Music, The Prince of Tides, The Great Santini, The Water is Wide, The Lords of Discipline, The Death of Santini, My Losing Season and he has more. His wife, Cassandra King, is also an author and I have only read one of her books, Moonlight, but enjoyed it very much.

Audiobooks are parts of lives in our home. We only do non-fiction or, to be more specific, personal development.
Jim Rohn- Anything from the late Jim Rohn we love.
Personal Powers - Tony Robbins

The Aladdin Factor - Canfield and Hanson
The Power of Purpose- Les Brown
Goal Setting - Zig Zigglar

Mastery - Robert Greene
You Were Born Rich - Bob Proctor
Think and Grow Rich - Napoleon Hill

Some deeper spiritual ones
Deepak Chopra and the late Dr. Wayne Dyer

Really, anything that help me become a better person, I will listen to.

we actually listen to old radio mystery / detective shows. Our favorite are the Johnny Dollar ones (when played by Bob Bailey). There is an XM radio old time radio channel - but i have found web sites where i can download them - so now just play via bluetooth from my phone. The entertainment and comedy shows are very lame; but the mysteries and detective shows are still surprisingly good. We find these better than the audio books; as the audio books with the same voice reading everything requires a little more attention.

Prior to retirement and being on the road a lot I enjoyed Michael Connolly's series of Harry Bosch detective stories. Bosch being a LAPD homicide detective. Not in the series but containing some of the characters was Blood Work. It was made into a movie staring Clint Eastwood.
The books stand by themselves but listen to them in order for continuity.
Google Connolly and I am sure you can find the list. Some I remember are Concrete Blond, Last Coyote, and Angels Flight.
Bosch is also an Amazon Prime original series for you streaming folks. Titus Williver nails the character.
Also another vote for W. E. B Griffin.
