Fall color: where are you finding it?

Okay, so here we are, high centered in October with no open time to hit the road for fall color. Bummer! We need some vicarious travel, aka "Your trip" --instead of "Ours." Bah, humbug! We know some of you happy 'streamers are hitting the open roads this month. Please, where are you going? Share your trips, tell your stories, salve the frustration we feel, penned up at home, looking at our AS, but not having time or the freedom to pack her up for the road. Next year, retirement. . .look out, October, here we come!

Don't wait...head out for an overnight!

We just got back from a great overnight at Lincoln State Park in Indiana. Pulled in Sunday morning and left this afternoon. When arrived there were maybe ten other campers (including tents) and that number dropped to three after checkout time. We virtually had the place to ourselves.

We booked online so we weren't sure about the campsite but it turned out to be perfect. Backed into a corner spot which overlooked the lake and had direct access to two of the trails in the park.

A quick rundown of the last 24 hours: campfires, smores, hiking, kids waded in the water, fished with my son, took a daybreak walk with the new pup in the woods, falling leaves, grilled flatbread sandwiches and potatoes on the fire, hd scrambled eggs on the lakes shore....and the weather!...a perfect 68 degrees during the day, down to 44 at night and not a cloud in the sky.

We also just bought one of those hamocks from CW and made use of it right away. Lot's of reading, haning out and looking up at that changing canopy.

This one was a warmup to Cloudland Canyon in a few weeks. Can't wait.

Petunia and I pulled into Logan, Utah last Thursday ... caught a lot of Fall color on the way in. The next day we took the scenic drive up Logan Canyon to Bear Lake ... this is considered to be one of the Best in the West for Fall color .... it did not disappoint!

Fall--A paint brush of beauty

We took our annual weekend (vacation) several weeks ago & while it was slightly before the major color display, it was still a great time. We visited the Mesabi iron range at Hoyt Lakes, Mn, where we had lived some 35 years ago. The campground was almost empty and the weather was great. The attached pic from the Skibo firetower location is looking North & the watershed from the ridge line in the distance all flows North to the Hudson Bay area and the setting sun location is Whitewater Lake in Hoyt Lakes. The river scene is the St. Louis River, which eventually flows into Lake Superior at Duluth, Mn. This was our last outing for 04 as we have sadly put the A/S to bed for the winter. The wife retires next year, so we'll no longer need to week end camp, it'll whatever we desire.
Best,

Long time coming down here

In Texas, we have to wait till about November, but we get good color in the hardwood forests of east Texas and a few spots elsewhere. My favorites are Lost Maples State Park in the Hill Country and the Texas State Railroad between Rusk and Palestine.

Lost Maples is swamped on weekends, but I can always get a site during the week. For the railroad, it is best to get reservations during the peak color season and get there early. RV sites are available at Rusk.

Smile Fall in Maine

The colors are beginning to peak just West of Bangor, Maine. Not quite as brilliant this year as in the past - but we are spoiled! The leaves seem to be dropping before reaching full color. I'm wondering what the winter will bring - but this year we have the option of going south any time we want to (recently retired!)

We've had a bone dry month of September here in St. Louis. The cold nights have finally come and we see some evidence of color. It will be muted though due to the lack of rain. We are headed out to the Lake of the Ozarks followed by Branson. Hopefully a little color will be found there.

Color just starting to change in southern Michigan, last weekend were near Grand Rapids and color was maybe 5% changed. Will be going to Hocking Hills area of Ohio the 16th to 21st of this month which should be well into color season. Then put the trailer away for a short winter as my wife is retiring the end of January and we plan on heading to Texas the first of Feburary.

We in central Ohio are just starting into peak fall colors, but will be heading to the Ozarks in week so I hope the fall colors are peaking then.

If it had an Airstream in it, we would have paid $50 for it ... ah, but it's a beautiful picture anyway! Nice job, Porky!

Great pictures, all! Hubby just came home this evening and announced that some time has opened up in the calendar, so. . .maybe we'll join all of you in that annual fall AS drive for autumn glory. Can't wait for a sunny, crisp Ozark weekend! Thanks for the reports-from all over the country! Sounds like an Airstream Life story is lurking in all this somewhere!

Getting a great shot on that road with an Airstream in it would be pretty hard. Not too many places to pull over ... somewhat narrow and twisty in places ... and the locals like to drive fast.

Out of all the photos I have taken on our odyssey .... very few include the Airstream on a beautiful road or location ... not that easy to do ... makes me appreciate the ones I see elsewhere.

Fall color

I am joining a number of other Airstreamers at Cloudland Canyon State Park in Northwest GA at the end of October. We hope to catch the color at its peak.

Wish us luck,

Andy

well,it may not have an airstream in it, but to me it connotates the airstream lifestyle of seeing what is over the next hill in style and class, doncha know.....

Pics

Finally got some pics from this last weekend's camping trip in Indiana. We had the place to ourselves (virtually) and backed up to the lake. Colors were just starting to turn. The kids had a blast.
