I wanted to add an expanded fuel tank to our F 250 however I was told that if I did it would adversely impact the warranty. So I was wondering if anyone carried extra Diesel fuel in a 2 or 5 gallon container for emergencies.

When we travel in areas where I think it may be a problem, we carry two five gallon cans of Diesel in the back of the truck. I tie them to the side of the truck bed to prevent them from turning over, and have not had a problem.

just keep topping off your fuel when you can. When i was a rookie I almost ran out 2 times and had to ask a truker at a truck stop for fuel and also some nice burners coming back from burning man at another incident. there's no guarantee every fuel stop town has diesel on supply.

You can get tool boxes with transfer tanks built into the bottom, or just use a cross bed tank like the heavy equipment guys do. FWIW I put expanded tanks on my 96 F350 AND put the cross bed tool box/tank combo, only problem now is that it takes a friggin' bank loan to fill up.

My total capacity is somewhere around 125 gallons. I use the cross bed tank to refuel tractors and other farm equipment.

Check out Titan auxiliary fuel tanks. I replaced the stock 34 gallon tank with a 56 gallon under cab and body Titan tank on my 2012 Dodge Ram diesel. The stock pump and fittings are used in the new tank so the only lost warranty is on the removed and discarded diesel fuel tank itself.

Switz did you talk to Dodge about your warranty before you added the titan tank. I am being told my dealership not to add it. Maybe I need to go to Ford HQ for their input.

Some folks plumb the added tanks into the stock fuel system. Others simply carry a tank in the truck bed with a pump and fuel nozzle and add fuel to the stock tank when needed.

Beware of too much fuel. If you are a heavy user this is a great idea. Most of us are heavy users while towing. When not towing, not so much. Diesel fuel has a tendency to grow some "STUFF" in it when sitting around for long periods. There are additives to reduce this and if you have fuel sitting in a tank for long periods be sure and research this. I'm interested in adding fuel capacity also and do not wish to discourage this modification. Just throwing something to consider out there. Diesel just has some unique properties from gasoline. Of course now there are issues to consider with gas also.

I put it this way, they have to prove that taking one tank down and replacing it with another and using all the original pumping equipment and original fuel hose equipment in the same relative location is any different than cleaning the original tank and reinstalling same. The issue is the dealer does not get all the revenue. You need to ask them one basic question, did you take my money and make a profit on it? Then, they better represent the customer. Otherwise, why did you buy from that dealership?

With all my modifications, I found an independent shop with nine master certified mechanics to work on my truck with no questions asked. A qualified mechanic will keep a good truck running for a long time. The untrained kids at many dealerships are more apt to cause long term damage because of inexperience, lack of any training on diesel trucks and a poor attitude or a know it all attitude.

A dealer with a sour attitude can cancel your warranty out of spite if you report errors in their service to the upstream folks.

I figure they might warranty a light bulb or door handle if it fell off....

Hi, by law they cannot cancel your factory warranty, but they can deny a claim if they can prove that the after market item caused the problem. And they can charge you the extra labor if for any reason they have to remove or work around a non-factory part.

When my truck was in to the local Ford dealership for it's service last week, I asked the service manager whether an aftermarket replacement tank would affect warranty. He said no, and that they work with a Titan dealer down the street - after the Titan dealer installs the tank, the truck can be brought into the Ford dealership to get the tank gauge recalibrated. The manager said that a lot of guys are replacing fuel tanks on their trucks, and the dealership might soon start doing the upgrades themselves.

I'm strongly considering putting a 51 gallon replacement tank on, but I respect polariyze's comments about stale fuel. There was one point on last year's summer's southwest trip that I was running on fumes at the end of a leg, I don't want to put myself in that position again.

Aside from that, I put less than 10000 miles on the truck last year, but hopefully that will change in the future

I keep a five gallon Yellow plastic diesel container in my van. In 7 years, though, I've only needed it once - in western Ontario while traveling around Lake Superior. As Roger said, diesel will grow an algae that will clog filters, so you have to use it, not store it.

When we travel, I always keep a 5 gal diesel, a 5 gal gas (for the generator) and an extra propane tank. Never know when you'll ( or someone else) need them. As well, we always top off at every stop.

I carry 10 extra gallons. They are a good insurance policy for my forgetfulness nowadays

. I have had to use them 3 different times. All three were for stranded motorists

(2 rver's and 1 truck driver). I haven't needed them yet, but am always glad they are there.

Hi, nice set-up; I carry one red 5 gallon gas can in the same area on my trailer.

My thanks for all who replied. For now I think I will go with the extra five gallon fuel tank. I just don't think I can justify the expense for a replacement tank.
