Ever ride in the trailer while in motion?
I know Lucy did it, but I wonder whether or how often any others here have ridden in their trailers while under tow?
If you've ridden in the back, what was it like?
Did you feel like an outlaw? Did you nap? Did you get seasick? Did anything noteworthy happen?
For no good reason--other than I'd like to try it myself--I'm curious.

In my old SOB once for just a few miles. Kinda like riding in a boat in choppy water, except with a lot more creaks, pops, rattles!

BTW, I'm SURE it would be better in the AS because the things that moved and loosened up in the SOB, don't in the AS.

Not only is that true but having had my son ride in ours to see what was going on.. he turned green very quick. I wouldnt suggest it.

I haven't.
Some states outlaw it while others don't. Mine doesn't, although a creative cop might write a citation for careless or reckless driving and try to make it stick.

When we were transporting therapetic riding horses, I used to make some of the truck drivers ride in the horse trailer for a mile or two to understand what the horse was experiencing.

Wish I had a kid to toss in the TT to see what was going on. I was thinking about setting up my camera on a hard mount to do some video to see if the ride rattles much.

I certainly am not advocating traveling in any trailer! For all the above reasons. I'm suggesting hat if you NEED to experience or diagnose something, you go to a VERY rural area and do your diagnosis as quickly as possible.

I don't suggest this at all.
BUT.... if I had a driver I could trust, and a location with no traffic, I'd like to run mine up to 65 mph for a couple of minutes with me in it. Maybe at every tire change to verify it rolls smoothly. No doubt you could pick out bad wheel bearings too if you know the baseline sounds.
Since I don't have the prerequisites, I haven't done it.

I would love to hear from someone who has tried riding in the Airstream while being towed. Come on I know you're out there, speak up. The question was'nt is it legal, is it safe, or even is it the most brilliant thing to do. The question is have you ever done it, and what was it like. Inquiring, and maybe even slightly deranged minds want to know.
I remember back in my younger days doing what we called van surfing. Children do not try this. We would ride in the back of my Dodge van while cruising. We did a lot of cruising back then. Anyway it was great fun, we would laugh like idiots, heck maybe we were idiots. But that's beside the point. The point being it was FUN, FUN, FUN.

I rode in the back of our 65 Safari. We live in the country with only 3 neighbors on our 2 mile long road. I went only 1 mile to the end of the road. I got out at that point and ordered a new axle that evening. After replacing the axle I did the ride again. It rolled much smoother but I still was glad to get out after the mile. Way too much movement and noise.

Thanks for clarifying. I always thought SOB was square old box, because when we first looked at AS TT's the salesman made a comment something about "if you don't like it then maybe you need a box." He must have been having a bad day. He didn't get the sale.

tkasten, good job on the axle diagnosis. I would ride in back if I thought it necessary to check things out. The conditions would have to be fairly well controlled and for a limited time only.

I ride in a trailer with the owner, to show them how much sharp vibration there is when they need a new axle. It only takes a couple of miles on a country road. Then do it after the new axle and you will be amazed how much smoother the ride is. It floats over the rough roads and railway crossings. My wife will drive and it's good to have a radio with you to stop when needed.

Yeah, now this thread is riding in the right direction. Who wants to be scolded with that's illegal, that's unsafe, that's blah, blah, blah. We all Know that already.
Now has anyone done it just for the fun of it?

That's right! So let's see....yup it's not legal in most states, but for diagnostic purposes who's gonna care out in the country.
Unsafe for even short distances???? How many of us ride motorcycles, jump out of planes with a rag and some string on our backs, ride bicycles on streets with cars, jog in the street, hunt, fish, swim, DRIVE ON THE FREEWAYS PULLING 10,000 pounds! C'mon folks, life is a risk, some are worth taking to get answers.

The original post says nothing about diagnostics, quite the opposite. When you have cut a few people out of wrecked vehicles and provided the emergency medical care, then come back and talk to me about my being too uptight about this.
