US90 west until you get to Slidell, LA, then US190 until you get to Baton Rouge, then US61 to Natchez (I've driven that leg many times the last couple of years); across the Mississipp River then north on US425 into Arkansas to Pine Bluff. At that point you're north of Texas and can choose any route you like.

I understand being a Texaphobe; I grew up in southwest Oklahoma and went to college at Oklahoma State. During my college years, every joke I heard was a Texas Aggie joke, which I thought were hilarious, until I traveled through Texas and realized that south of the Red River, all of my Texas Aggie jokes were misinterpreted as being Okie jokes (and tragically, they sounded better as Okie jokes, too )…

Spent a lot of time in OK City with my job... Most fun I ever had watching a football game was the Oklahoma State vs OU, at the OK City Hooters. Eating wings, drinking beers, and watching the rivalry. It was a hoot!
I liked your Louisianna route that you picked out. Will have to try that next time I go through there. 90 west for that long should be rather interesting... but rather more time consuming than I-10. How is 90 for smoothness? It's pretty nice in the Lake City to Jacksonville area of North Florida, just wondered how well it holds up as you go west...

Appreciate the fact that you are concerned about dying of boredom!
To drive across MO, take the 50 hi way instead of I 70, much better scenery.
If you go through Arkansas, then I highly recommend hitting Beaver Lake off 62 in the northwest corner. Great clean Corp of Engineer Lakes. Close to Eureka Springs.
Couple of choice roads in CO and WY.
CO hiway 86 from about Limon to the southern portion of the Denverplex is stunningly beautiful. Open range with Pike's Peak in the distance. New blacktop and good road.
And in WY, the road from Rawlings thru the Wind River Range, ending in Dubois is a I Can't Wait to Go Again drive. Dubois is a charming town and the drive is through fantastic scenery, ranch land, and some Native lands if you like to shop at those great stores for silver jewelry and etc. Also runs thru I believe NFS lands; had decent amount of bathroom stops/rest areas for a place so sparsely populated.

If crossing Missouri on the northern side there is Rt. 36 from Hannibal to St. Joseph. Good road, services along the way and little to no truck traffic. ( or any traffic for that matter).

Not bad to the east of New Orleans, at least the parts of it I've travelered. But I haven't traveled the whole stretch.

I've taken 40 across to about halfway through the Texas panhandle, and then taken 83 north all the way to 90 in South Dakota. 90 is pretty low traffic in the off season.
The Badlands are pretty interesting to drive through. You can also visit Mount Rushmore. There are no crowds this time of year. Then in Wyoming, detour north on 14 to 24 to visit Devils Tower. No picture will ever do it justice.
All of western Montana is beautiful. The eastern half is pretty mind numbing. Don't think I'll ever do a crossing on 94 ever again.
Alternately, you can detour off of 83 onto 2 into Alliance, and north to visit Carhenge. Then back down to 80, off on 25, then 26 to Yellowstone. On 26 watch for deer. :-(
The 90 route is pretty interesting. I'll never forget driving it and west of Billings I come around a bend and see these really strange mountains. I said to my wife "Man, those are some crazy mountains." A little further we saw a sign "Crazy Mountains." I still get a chuckle out of that.

Going to leave the Airstream behind and take the adventure mobile instead. Little ones hasn't camped in it yet.
We'll be heading towards the Smokies again on the 15th.
