End of summer trip to low country

I celebrated the end of summer by taking the kids on a week long trip to the Georgia coast and South Carolina low country a couple of weeks ago. We left Mobile and headed east on I-10 to Tallahassee and then cut up to Georgia to take Highway 82 the rest of the way. This was a very pleasant and easy drive. I got some great bacon at Richards in Homerville on way. We made it to Blythe Island Park that night. This is a county park with large pull through sites, full hookups and lots of privacy. The only drawback was lots of no see ums at twilight and early morning.
We used it as a base to explore Jekyll and St Simons Islands. There is a newer sea turtle recovery center on Jeykell the kids enjoyed and we toured the club house and Indian Mound (William Rockefellers house). On St Simons we went to Christ Episcopal and Fort Fredrica. The visit has inspired me to re-read Eugenia Price's books.
Next stop was Savannah for a good dinner at Lady and Sons and a quick walk through town for kids benefit. I parked the whole rig for free on Sunday at the visitor center and walked from there. It was then on to Charleston were we stayed at James Island County Park. I had reserved the last available site about two earlier. As a result, I ended up with a narrow but still very useable site with plenty of privacy. The park was beautiful and the kids loved the water park which was a 2 minute bike ride from camp site within the park. It has several slides, lazy river and zero entry pool. And on Tuesday it was two for one admission. I liked that the park was 7-10 minutes from downtown Charleston. We visited Fort Sumpter, the market, enjoyed a carriage ride and walking around, and the kids had a fun rainy afternoon at the children's museum. We had an excellently dinner at the Hominy Grill. I also enjoyed a pig ear appetizer at the Creative Kitchen and Taproom.
From Charleston, we headed back south with a lunch break in Beaufort, a break stretch on I-95 and I-16 before getting off on Highway 96 toward Columbus. We spent the night at Lake Pines and the toured the National Infantry Museum the next day. I highly recommend it. From there we headed to Montgomery and then home.
I had been to all of these places several times before but it was fun seeing the kids take it in for the first time. I definitely look forward to returning to James Island in particular.
I'll post some picture in a separate post.

A beautiful part of the country, and my favorite.

Another time...consider a stop at the Gullah History/Culture Museum in Beaufort, also perhaps a ferry ride from Saint Mary's, GA, to Cumberland Island, where you can hike live oak forests and see wild horses.

J White, thanks for the trip down memory lane. Will be heading back to the Low Country in couple of months.
