Lightbulb Easy GPS mounting solution

We just bought a Garmin Nuvi 350, mostly because of the great reviews and the lower price, now that newer models are out there. But in California, window-mounted GPS units are prohibited. Here's my solution: most units provide a smooth disk for dash-mounting the GPS suction cup base, but the adhesive on the disk makes it non-transferable for use in another car/tow vehicle. I applied some heavy duty adhesive Velcro to the bottom of the disk (where the adhesive surface would be), and applied the attracting Velcro surface to the top of a 16 oz can of beans. With the mounting disk on the can, I can place the can in any cupholder (usually in easy reach, unlike many windshields), and suction-mount the GPS to the disk. The weight of the can is a great stabilizing base for the GPS, so it won't tip over, even in the tightest turns (as long as it fits in the cupholder). The can/base is as portable as any canned drink, and if you're desperate, you can eat the contents of the can! Just slap some Velcro on a replacement can, and you're ready to go!

Sounds like a Calif. law. I'll bet it's more of a risk issue gazing over at your can of beans than it would be looking at a properly placed windshield mount.

here's the easiest solution. you have to order two parts though. they are made to fit specific models of most every vehicle.

ProClip Mounting System*-*Device Holders and Dashboard Vehicle Mounts

i have one for my garmin nuvi and also blackberry mounted in my tahoe. these are fantastic. i'll post some pix later.

Easy mounting of gps

Yeah, I know there are more customized solutions, but they cost about $30-$50. My approach costs about $1.25 (for the canned good), and I don't have to "gaze" at the gps to navigate (no one should be staring at their gps while driving); the "text-to-speech" feature tells me directions, so IMHO, there is little risk in the gps screen being located in the cupholder.

Thumbs up Velcro

Great solution and pics of the GPS, ESCAPE POD. I used Velcro to mount my PressurePro Tire Monitor to the dash, satellite radio to the cup holder, indoor/outdoor thermometer, etc., and it conveniently sticks to the fabric lining inside the AS.
I buy it by the roll, and keep it next to the duct tape.
