Eastern Sierras Campgrounds

We're thinking of driving up 395 to the Bishop area... possibly as far as Mammoth Lakes. Any suggestions for campgrounds? We much prefer Forest Service, etc. over RV parks, unless there is just a gem of a RV park in that neck of the woods. We camped years ago with our tent trailer at Rock Creek and loved it... but can't remember if the roads and campsites will accommodate our 22' CCD. Any suggestions regarding that beautiful part of California would be appreciated.

Tuttle Creek near Lone Pine. Used to be free, now I think it's $5.00 a night. Check out my photo page, I have a couple pics I took there early June.

heck, if you are going as far as Mamoth why not go a little further to Lee Vining and head up 120 to Tioga Pass? Junction Campground, Tioga Lake and Ellery Lake are forest service cg's and I don't think they take reservations so last time I was there it was first come first served.....caveat,the ride up and down is not for the faint of heart, you will be camping a little above 9000' here, no hookups or water at the sites, well water available at Tioga and Ellery. Spectacular location, just on the east side of Yosemite NP. another area to think about is Convict Lake just before you get to Mamoth, nice cg and it's a short drive to Hot Creek. wish I was there!

There are 4 Nat'l Forest Campgrounds near Bishop:

1. East Fork Campground, about 23 miles NW of Bishop on 395, then 5 miles South on CR-FH89. 36 ft max RV length. 760-873-2500

2. Four Jeffrey Campground, about 13 miles SW of Biship on Hwy 168, then 1/2 mil south on CR-8S01. 760-873-2500

3. French Camp, about 22 miles NW on 395 from junction of Hwy 6 and Hwy 395, then 1/4 mile South on CR-FH89. 36 ft max RV length. 760-873-2500

4. Tuff Campground, about 23 miles NW on 395 from Bishop. 36 ft max RV length. 760-873-2500

BLM manages Crowly Lake campgrounds, 22ft max RV length. It is 5 1/2 miles north of Bishop on 395, then turn onto Crowley Lake Dr. (760) 872-4881.

Note that all of these will be HOT during August. We prefer to stay at the higher (and typically cooler) elevations up by June Lakes or Mammoth.

Nat'l Forest has 2 campgrounds near June Lake:

1. OH Ridge Campground. (760) 647-3000.

2. Silver Lake District Campground. (760) 647-3044. First come, first served.

All of these campsites have no hookups.

Good luck!

Hope you're familiar with the frequent contributor here, Bryan Leipper, and his website: http://sierranevadaairstreams.org/. I remember the website has some general ideas for boondocking off the well-traveled path. It could be a good general resource for you.

I just got back on Monday (7/25/05) from Mammoth Lakes area. If you want forrest type surroundings yet kind of close to Mammoth village, you might want to check out New Shady Rest Campground. They do have restrooms and water but that's it. Sewer dump is at entrance to campground. I stayed for 1 week with family in my 05 Safary. It was great!.
It's also close to the "Devel's Post Pile" and fishing lakes. Weather was about 80 during the day and 50's at night.
A little rain but it was great!
