Since you obviously fly fish, you might like any of the campgrounds found in the Toiyabe National Forest, just out of Bridgeport. They are all "no hook-ups," of course.... We stayed in Crags last June, and the fishing was pretty good (from what I observed) and the scenery gorgeous. Of course, it might be a tad warmer in July. Other campgrounds in the area had more shade and were closer to the creek(s), but we loved the scenery and quiet we experienced at Crags.

Travel HWY 395 from Oregon south through Calif. This side of the SIERRA is our favorite. We lived 8 years near Carson City and explored it all. Especially Bridgeport south, Bishop, Mono Lake, Mamouth, Devils Postpiles, Convict Lake, Lone Pine......just keep going. Stop often.

Just head east out of Tracy, through Stockton, up 88. Stop at the little lakes coming down the east side of the pass. Turn right at Woodfords, then take your time around that loop. Try the fishing past Markleville, then maybe go over Monitor Pass and do some fishing at Topaz Lake. Snow should be gone from Monitor by July.

Bodie State Park near Lee Vining is a well-preserved (and state-protected) ghost town. But don't take your rig - the road in is too rough for your treasured Safari.

395 is a great cruise; just don't be tempted to go into Death Valley that way.

Mono Village

If you are looking for a place to camp, try Mono Village Resort at Twin Lakes west of Bridgeport. Our family has been going there for years. They have dry camping and hookups, marina, restaurant, store, bar and everything related to fishing.

Thanks for the help, I was looking at Mono Village earlier. It seems to be all first come first serve, have you ever had a problem getting a site there?
We are looking for a base camp for about a 4 or 5 day trip.

Zug, Shouldn't be any problem. If you show up on 4th of July weekend, you may not get hookups but the place is huge and is never full for dry camping, although it definitely gets more crowded. This was our campsite on Labor Day weekend...
