Durango - Silverton

Looking for a full hookup campground between Durango-Silverton. Will be traveling from Italy, Texas in June. Any ideas? Thanks Bobby

Alpen Rose is about 5 mi. north of Durango. Not much else in between with full hook-ups.

Bobby,
On the north side of Durango, there are two that come to mind...United is ok...the train comes thru the campground(Narrow Gauge, daytime runs, only)...it's on the right as you head out of town...a little further out, on the left, is Alpen Rose...both of these are on Hwy 550...East of Durango is a nice KOA(Hwy 160)...In Silverton, there are 5 full-hook-ups...Silver Summit, The Peaks, Red Mountain, A&B, and Silverton Lakes...
Ther's also the Bertch driveway...no sewer, but 110 and a water hose...relatively level, center of town, dump down the street is $5...no charge for the driveway, there...but you may have to bear the stigma of being associated with the Trailer Trash Queen...
One suggestion...check the weather map, as Silverton has been known to have snow around...well...every month of the year...
PM me, and I'll send you our cell #...we should be back in Silverton by June...returning from...Texas...currently doing nothing but nothing in the desert outside of Quartzsite, AZ...
mike

We stayed at the Durango Riverside resort last summer and had a good time:

It is several miles north of of the other parks noted on this thread. I don't know much about the other parks.

We stayed at an absolutely wonderful park in Durango. The name Lightner Creek Campground phone #970-247-5406. Very well maintained, knowledgeable owners on site. The park is in a delightful box canyon with a creek running through it. You won't be disapointed.

I live part time in Durango - my favorites are United and Lightner Creek.

Sorry for stating the obvious

The road between Durango and Silverton is incredible. Closed in the Winter,
still patches of snow in the Summer, ice cold creeks, beautiful scenery.
Plan for some very steep sections, high altitude, and high cliffs.

No snow on the roads in the summer though...

Is it practical to tow a 27' AS over this route in the Summer? I've driven from Durango to Montrose at least a couple of times in a small car but it was before I owned a trailer. I have an F350 diesel so horsepower isn't an issue but I can't remember how tight those hairpin turns were. It seems like I saw tractor-trailer rigs on the route.

Possibly someone could compair this route to Hoosier Pass between Fairplay and Breckenridge. I towed over that last summer with no problems.

By the way, the road is not closed in the winter - at least very often - it closes occasionally due to avalanche, but its mostly open.

You should not have a lot of trouble going over that road - tons of 18 wheelers do it and I see lots of trailers and motorhomes - just need to go a little slow and try not to use the brakes too much on the downhills.

The road is much improved since it's "million dollar highway" days, years and years ago. it is now a wide, two lane highway with paved shoulders nearly all the way. We towed our 19-foot Bambi from Durango to Silverton last summer with no problems and there were lots of larger trailers and motorhomes on the highway.

The "Old Hundred" Goldmine Tour is a little north and east of downtown Silverton on a well-maintained dirt road, if I recall correctly. There are a couple of old geezers that own it now, and it's one of the best mine tours in the USA. I'd definitely try to see that, if you stop in the area.

Also, check out "Box Canyon Falls" at the south end of Ouray. It's an exciting short hike, and most people don't even know it's there.
