Driving to the Mother ship aka Jackson Center, Ohio

We are driving east from Colorado in May on I 70 through Kansas, Missouri part of Indiana to Jackson Center, Ohio. Any recommendations for parks or rv parks along the way?

Hi. I don't have specific recommendations for sites but a general recommendation about the AllStays app. Very helpful for planning trips through places you've never been. All the info at your fingertips. It's $10 which is steep for an app but worth every penny!

Also - if you're a WBCCI member, don't forget to look for courtesy parking through your membership - and some here on AirForums - members list whether or not they have courtesy parking too.

Good luck!

Trailside east of KC is nice, as is Lazy Days in Hermann (sp?), MO.
Camp Lakewood is nice in Effingham, IL.

You can stay at the plant in Jackson. Nice little town. Don't miss the plant tour!

As for on the way, Sondermans in St Charles MO right on the river is decent and right on the Katy Trail (a rails to trails project if you bike). A nice walk down the trail will take you to downtown St Charles with restaurants and bars. Gambling boats if you care to toss some money into the river. Also some river road history. Not wilderness camping but decent with city amenities if you need supplies or a night on the town.

At Worlds of Fun there's a campground you can stay at in Kansas City Mo. Also lazy days in Montgomery Missouri along I-70 is a nice rv park. Full hook ups on both. worlds of Fun is a Good SAMs and I work there part time.

The city park at Hermann, MO is a pretty nice camping spot with full hookups. It is maybe 20 minutes from I-70, but Hermann is a delightful little town. Above the town is a nice winery with a great tour, nice tasting room and a delightful German restaurant. There is also a wonderful bakery in town. Lazy Days up on I-70 is pretty nice if you can't go into Hermann.

Mothership Visit

Drop-ins welcomed and serviced ASAP. Scheduled appointment recommended. Great on-sight docking goes fast - get there early before service center opens. I made my arrival on a Sunday, the day before my appointment! Very sleepy town - REALLY! Nearest "big" town is about 35 minutes south of JC along I-75 at Troy, OH. Nice Folk in JC and at factory. The AS factory tour is interesting, as is the Bicycle Museum near the town.

Yes, I also use Campendium which lists all nationals parks and state parks. I use Reserve America, Good Sam, RV park reviews and Road Trip America for my planning. I just appreciate AS feedback as well.

Rough road

We drove I 70 east from Indy to JC last spring and we won't be driving that route again. The highway was in awful shape. Potholes, washboard surface, etc. A little rough road is expected but this was too much for us.

We've stayed at Sundermeiers many times and agree with your statement. It's a little pricy but very clean, convenient, pull through concrete sites, just a perfect spot for a overnight or few night stay. The town of St Charles is very quaint with many restaurants for causal dining, try the brewery, catch it for happy, many craft beers, personal pizza or many other light foods in the bar at discount prices.

If you have the time, and enjoy history, there is a lot to see traveling across Kansas & Missouri. Especially if you get off of I-70 and take one of the other arteries like Hgwy 50 or 24. Fort Scott, KS is a Civil War fort and has a beautiful town park with W/E for $5...we were the only ones there. East of KC is a little town of Arrow Rock, which dates back to 1834 and was the starting point of the Santa Fe trail. Neat little town and there is a state historic park there with camping. Many others along the way...

Goodland KS, Mid America RV on West side of town. Nice place with grass and some trees. Can be noisy if the wind is from North, but usually is not. Not fancy and not trashy.

Abilene KS, there is a nice set menu chicken dinner place on the North side of town, the Eisenhower museum down town, an original mansion, and the Russel Stover Chocolate store, just off I70 on the West side. A new place to see or eat every trip.

Have a safe trip. Pat

In Indiana, one of my favorites is Richard Lieberman SRA near Cloverdale. Just a few minutes south of I 70 on IN SR 243.

Ditto on driving I 70 - one of the worst roads!

Try US 36. Pick it up east of Denver off of I70 and enjoy the drive. It can take you all the way into Ohio close to Jackson Center. Get on I75 in Ohio and drive north about another 30 minutes. Many small town parks and campgrounds available. I've made that trip several times and find it is just as fast taking a US road and staying off of I-70. Better roads, better choices of parks, more relaxing time.
