That one picture really rung a bell.

What a great first long journey, and they have only just begun. Really enjoying your posts, it's almost like being there without getting wet.

Thank you so much for sharing.

That's quite a complement. Thanks. Maybe I'll take up travel writing as my retirement pursuit.

Day 30 – Tellico Plains, TN to Hiawassee, GA

Before we left Tellico Plains, we made a visit to the Tellico Grains Bakery. This is a great small town bakery with fresh bread and pastries baked daily. You have to get there in the morning as they sell-out of the more popular items by noon. We picked up a loaf of sourdough bread and a blueberry and pumpkin scone. Sure beats the scones we had at Starbucks.

We pulled out of our courtesy parking place (last picture in this post) around noon. We only had 80 miles to go, and check-in wasn’t until 3:00 p.m., so there wasn’t any rush. It’s a good thing we didn’t have to make any time today, because all the roads to Hiawassee from Tellico Plains turned out to be very twisty mountain roads.

Our hillside site at Faluminum, proved to be a challenge to get Daisy level. After repositioning her several times, we finally found a spot that didn’t require a huge stack of blocks to get side-to-side level. Finally set-up, we greeted our neighbors and those walking around, and watched the other Airstreams pulling in. This place should be full by morning. Should be plenty of photo ops tomorrow.

Day 31 – Faluminum

We didn’t roll down the hill in the night, so I guess we have Daisy properly parked. Faluminum began with a 10:00 meeting to pass out open house signs and tickets for the raffle. A noon birthday party began the activities, and everyone turned out in their finest wear. After a birthday party lunch of hot-dogs and cupcakes, we walked around visiting the trailers displaying their open house signs. It’s always fun to see the different models and what people have done with them.

The Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds and Campground sites are pretty nice. We’re all in Area #1, the area without sewer hookups, cable TV, and wifi. Allen, the rally organizer said we would prefer to be in Area #2 but that was booked for this weekend. You can see the effects of the drought in one of the photos. It looks to me like the lake has dropped about 20 feet.

The potluck began at 6:00 p.m. and the line formed quickly after the blessing. After dinner, Allen and his impromptu band entertained us—they were very good. When we returned to Daisy, I tried to get a shot of her all lit up at night. This is an interesting effect. I don’t know if we are ready for Halloween or the Burning Man Festival.

Tomorrow, we pack up and begin our last two days of travel to home. When we get back, I’ll post all the rally photos I took in the gallery, and put an announcement on the rally thread.

Day 32 – Hiawassee to Milledgeville, GA

Most everyone seemed to be getting a slow start this morning, and with a 3:00 checkout time, there wasn’t any pressure to move quickly. The line at the dump station began to form around 11:00, but seemed to move quickly. We finished putting everything away about 11:30, took a walk around to say a few goodbyes, then returned to our site, hitched-up and pulled away around 12:30. We have allowed two days to get home from here, so our plan for today was to drive until 5:00 or 6:00 and then stop for the night.

One more mountain pass on US-76 between Hiawassee and Clayton, GA (where the Appalachian Trail crosses the road at 2,600 feet) and we were essentially through with the mountain grades and roads. We turned south at Clayton on US-441. Just south of Cornelia, GA you start a long downgrade as you come off the Appalachian foothills and descend to the costal plain. It was a little hazy today, but it looked like on a clear day you could see for hundreds of miles. South of Athens, GA we began to encounter heavy northbound traffic that turned out to be Georgia football fans returning victorious from Saturday’s match-up with Florida.

Our daylight began to run out at Milledgeville. We checked the Trailer Life directory and found the Scenic Mountain RV Park and Campground just south of town. We quickly set-up Daisy on her site for the night, and then took a drive through town. This is a beautiful little town with many antebellum homes and two college campuses. Milledgeville was Georgia’s state capital during the Civil War. Gen Sherman occupied it, but he only destroyed the government buildings, so many buildings here date from the early 1800s. The light was too poor to take any pictures, and unfortunately, we won’t be coming back this way tomorrow. Another town to mark for a return visit.

Day 33 – Milledgeville, GA to Viera, FL and Home

Before leaving the RV park this morning, I took a walk around and snapped a couple of photos of our site. This is a nice RV park with level sites carved out of the hills, but not many trees. It would be hot here in the summer. There is another Airstream in the park that someone lives in full time. No WBCCI numbers. Last night, we saw two more parked near houses in the town.

I wasn’t looking forward to today’s drive for two reasons. First, we have been on these roads before, and second with the tropical storm to the south and the high pressure bringing the season’s first cold weather to this area, a pressure gradient was set-up to give us a very windy drive. We continued south on US-441 to US-23, to US-1, and finally I-95 at Jacksonville, FL. The wind and rain started north of Jacksonville. Crossing the St. Johns River on I-295 (the Jacksonville bypass) was pretty exciting. They were reporting wind gusts over 30 mph and it felt like we were skidding sideways on the bridge. Slowing down seemed to be the cure and we crossed safely.

We’re home now—arrived at 7:00 p.m. We unloaded Daisy and took her over to the storage yard for the night. Tomorrow morning we’ll bring her home and give her a thorough cleaning. I’ll post some summary information in the next day or two after I get the house chores done. It’s good to be home, but sad to see the trip end. Rally season here in Florida begins next month. That will keep us busy through April, and then we’ll head out again. Bozeman, Glacier NP, and Canada is our itinerary for 2008. See you on the road.
