Dove season starts Thursday..

Have been Dove hunting over 15 years. Took the Airstream and my now 1 year old 2011 Superduty near Albany, Texas.Didn't even have my truck 3 days before I towed the Airstream. I did make sure I put almost 900 miles before we left though. I'm staying at Fort Griffin state park. The weather is showing 106 degrees there today. Suppose to be 103 tomorrow. The good news is opening day only suppose to get to 100 degrees. This will be my son and I's first trip since we got back from the Keys at the end of June.

I can't wait to see the feathers fly. I can smell the bacon and Jalapenos already.

Dove hunting is a fine tradition around here (Tidewater Virginia) as well. I have had the pleasure of being invited to several old-style hunts where the meet is addressed by a dignitary or some such, a prayer for bounty and safety and the promise of a fine barbeque afterwards.

Very Cool!! No dove hunting in Michigan, but goose opens Thursday and my son is coming home from college to harvest some flying rib eyes. Life is very good! Enjoy your time afield with your son.

Dove season: When my backyard supply of the usual four species climbs in proportion to local pressure. Luckily, it's also near time for the hummingbird migration. One friend in Rockport went through 75-lbs of sugar last year. They'd peck the window if he ran out.

My wife started arguing with me about a 16-ga recently. (Honey, what's wrong with a 20? [thinking supply and cost]. Nope, gotta have the sweet 16.



Don't pepper the roof of the trailer. If you get the truck, well, heck, it's only a Ford.

Good hunting. We are leaving our home in Idaho and heading to a job in Texas, around San Antonio. Taking our AS along with all of our hunting gear, birds, deer, turkeys, pigs, you name it. We are looking forward to the hunting opportunities in Texas as we have never hunted there. I have an Idaho wolf tag I am looking forward to filling when I get back to Idaho for Thanksgiving. The wolves are decimating our deer and elk herds.

The wolves are decimating our deer and elk herds. Decimation is only a reduction of 10%. But the decline in too-large deer and elk herds is only a good thing for riverine environments as found in the arid West. Seeing things as did Teddy Roosevelt and other 19th century naturalists/hunters -- or my Colorado pioneer ancestors -- is for the best, all around.

No public lands of note here in Texas I guess you've learned. Hunting can be an expensive proposition here due to the need to lease hunting rights (or permission to mega-corporation forest land in East Texas, etc). The hogs are a huge problem. Don't know if the drought this year will make it easier for you on those pests, but wish you the best of luck.

Aha, you must not have taken Latin in high school. The term comes from the Roman army. When a unit screwed up the higher command would punish the offending unit(s) by killing one of every 10 soldiers. Those Romans were mean motor scooters.

In our unit where I live, the wolves have "decimated" almost 50% of the elk herd. Funny thing is all the hoopla about snowmobiles in Yellowstone park "harassing" the wildlife. Ever see a pack of wolves harass an elk herd? Ever see a pack of wolves eating an elk while it's still alive? Now that's harassment. The Park has lost almost 45% of it's elk herd; of course the biologists say it was also caused by a "bad winter", yeah, alot of snow so the wolf pack could eat hearty. What we need is a group of Texas dove hunters to come to Idaho and shoot a few hundred wolves. You get 2 tags this year and unlimited wolf hunting in my unit, Sawtooth, so come on out.

Yep dove are good and plenty around our place. The kids like them but not the wife n same with ducks. But she will eat the turkey I shoot every fall. Those the neighbors feed them and beg me not to shoot one because they are pets. But I do and they understand because there husbands are on my side. To many turkeys. Just walk within 15 yards and take my pick. They taste better in the fall. And the kids love the feathers for a thanksgiving table decoration. But dove sandwiches are awesome.

I limited out , son got 4. Great times for all. It was HOT!!! Still Father and son time.

.....on the way there and home...300 miles total, from Dfw area to Albany,Tx I saw at least 25-30 NEW Superduties. 2011 and up. I didn't even count the 2010's-2008's. It's insane. All colors were to be see.

I'm glad Ford is doing good.

Best buddy just stopped by and borrowed my Browning Gold gas op. Apparently they're flying so well here over sunflowers that his 870 had made a mess of his jaw/shoulder over the last couple days.

I started dove hunting, mostly around Orange, TX. in the early '60's. In the 70's, 80's and 90's in TN. I didn't miss a single opening day. A few times after 2000 I missed an opening day but hit the weekend with a vengence. This is the second year in a row that I have missed an opening day as well as the weekend afterwards. I'm fishing next Thur., Fri., Sat. and maybe Sun. so it looks like missing the first two weekends this year. I hate missing out on things I have done for years.
