Door County Wisconsin

Hi folks!
We are thinking about going up to Door County in Wisconsin. For those who have been there, do you have any campground recommendations?

Regards,

Jack

Jack,

In the Door county region if you thow a rock you will hit a campground! We stayed at the Wagon Trail campground for a WBCCI rally and it was nice. lodge style meeting hall and nice shaded spots with lots of trees and good separation between sites. This was 6 or so years ago so take the recomendation with that in mind.

Have fun and watch out for deer ticks! They can carry lyme disease, long pants and bug spray are reccomended.

Just from my initial Internet search, Wagon Trail did seem to be the one I had the most interest in up to this point.

Thanks!

Door County suggestions

Jack,
You might keep the Peninsula State Park outside of Fish Creek in mind. It's a very pretty place, but is electric only.
In any case, you'll have a fine time; lot's to see and good eatin, be sure to try a "fish boil".

Thanks!

I received a number of positive comments from a listserve and here regarding Wagon Trail so I made a reservation there. I'm going up for a week in September and I got the last available full hookup site.

The weekend St. Louis paper did a travel story two weeks ago on Door county (which started my interest) and one of the pictures and paragraphs detailed the fish boil process. It looks pretty interesting.

One of the things we plan on doing is checking out the various campgrounds in the area. Its usually one of the things I do when going to a destination area for the first time.

Hi,

I spent 3 nights at Wagon Trails in Door County on my week long AS motor home trip through upper Michigan and Door county WI.

Wagon Trails is a nice, quite park featuring large wooded sites, many with water and electric. Only a few sites had sewer hookups, but there is a huny wagon service for $6 to get the tanks drained if needed. A swimming beach is a short bicycle ride away. The sites are well separated, similar to National or State forest campgrounds. Nicely run place. The lodge with bakery is an easy walk for morning coffee and delicious sweats.

Only negatives for me: The rate is a bit high. Typically, parks in their price range has full hook-up, a pool and stuff like that. The other thing is that the sites are crushed gravel with a dusty gray powder.

Campground Rates

Jim,
Thanks for the additional info. We are going up in early September so off season rates will be in effect. I would think that one of the factors in setting rates is the short season that some of these campgrounds have.

My former boss and myself considered purchasing a campground when we were both thrust into the job market due to acquisition of our employeer. What we found out after doing a lot of investigation and analysis, is that for the private campground owner, margins are pretty thin. I think we summed it up that while an owner you live like a pauper, but upon selling your retire as a king.

Bottom line

Jim,
Be advised that September and October are extremely popular months in Door County, for one simple reason: the fall colors!! It's almost like New England in that regard. In fact, I've heard Door county referred to as the "New England of the Midwest".
I'm certainly not trying to scare you off, by all means go and enjoy. Just don't be surprised by the crowds.

It couldn't be any worse than my trip to Gattlinburg Tn. mid October last year. Nothing could be much worse for crowds than that.

I don't want to take anything away from Gatlinburg, TN. but it sure has changed since I spent a week there in '77 during my honeymoon. I've been back 4 times since then staying from 3 days to 7 days in chalets and it seems it is getting crowded and more commercialized each time I go. I want to go again, with or without my Excella, but I think I will go during a less crowded time of the year. By the way, my wife caught more trout on our honeymoon than I did. I have never been able to live that down.

Door County

Jack,

I think you will enjoy Door County. We felt we missed a lot not having a car to explore with. There are some nice port towns on the bay such as Ellison and Egg Harbor we would have liked to spend time in. The campground is very nice as well.

I fantasized about opening up a campground during my “downsize” episode, but never got as far as researching it. Sounds like fun .. but!

BTW folks: When I mention the CG being on the pricey side, I didn’t want to scare anybody off. Just relaying the info. I know some folks are more price sensitive than others. Regardless, Wagon trails is not exorbitant even at summer rates. I think it was about $40 / night for water and electric. The park is spotless, well maintained, and well run. I’d stay there again on a return visit.

Jim,
Full hookup for off season which starts 9/2/02 is $31. Not too bad. Thanks for the additional info. We are looking forward to the trip. We need some cool air!

Regards,

Jack
