Campfires are one of life's little pleasures.

One of the great things about NF campgrounds is that frequently there are lots of cut trees around which you are encouraged to cut up and burn.

We spent the last two nights in a NF campground east of Aspen, CO, and had a fire all day yesterday. Cooked breakfast and dinner with it, river rushing nearby.

Life is good.

The worst part of campfires is the ignorance of what they can become when they are left to burn unattended. We're on pins & needles out here in the West with the 4th of July and summer camping season upon us.

It's all in knowing how to light and manage a camp fire, plus being a good neighbor while camping.

I have a colleague who visited singapore last week. Seems that the neighboring camp of Indonesia was being indiscreet with their campfire. He said that the air had to be chewed before breathing! The images online and from his personal experience were amazing.

Our Gnomes, like us, love campfires. Can't imagine camping without a campfire.

The last trip out we stayed at a privately owned RV "resort" where no campfires were allowed because it was within the city limits. I had a truck bed full of wood and was disappointed I didn't get to burn it.

The tin goats and the gnomes should get together sometime. That would turn some heads.

I'm a long time woodsman, and like to think that im pretty good at fires. But like many on this thread I love to sit at a fire but hat the smell! When I have a fire I only use well seasoned oak and hickory. It burns hotter thus less smoke also the smell is less intrusive to the nose. More akin to the smell of driving by a BBQ place in the south! I hate the smell of smoke in the camper, on my clothes, on me. But i love to get lost in a good Roaring fire.

We`ve camped since we were first married and I camped many times when I was a kid, even camped on horseback on the Pacific Crest Trail with my dad, but I still could do a better job of building smoke free fires. I agree that the smoke is making you a bad neighbor.
