We pretty much did all of our juniper wood burning in Utah on BLM land-- there is a lot of the dead stuff around, and not only was it fine for grilling & conviviality, but it gives the food a nice flavour. Not sure what the problem could be. Maybe the wood is green & less than a year old? Sometimes sagebrush gets pretty big and if some ended up in a wood pile, that would be pretty wretched.

Higher up in elevation, some other nice woods to burn are aspen or some of the small small hardwoods-- Rocky Mountain maple & Gambel's oak.

[Hey, you gotta be an amateur botanist!]

Worst firewood experience: spending ten bucks for a bundle of tamerisk at the Furnace Creek store in Death Valley. The stuff wouldn't burn to save its soul. Probably green-- or maybe just a poor species.

Having a fan to blow the smoke away seems pretty far away from "camping". But Colorado (or Washington) brownies would make it all seem mellow.

Campfires and Cigarettes

I hated campfires this weekend. The campsites were not that far apart and each one had a fire ring. Despite being in the upper 80s and humid our neighbor had to have a campfire burning all the time. At first we were upwind so we didn't notice the smoke, it was blown out in to the lake. A weak cold front came through on Saturday and by the afternoon it stopped raining and out came the campfire. With the passing of the front the wind shifted and now we were downwind of the smoke The smoke blew right into our campsite. The AS offered to block some of the smoke. The sun came out and it got warm but it would've been nice to have opened a few windows as the wind from the north was cool but too much smoke. I turned on the AC but forgot the small shower and bath vents were open and the smell of the campfire got into the trailer. When sitting out side under the awning you could see smoke moving low to the ground past the rear of the AS and past the front of the AS. I could see they were dutch oven cooking on the fire. I'm not sure what wood they were using but they carried in a lot of logs. So for the majority of Saturday we couldn't really sit outside.

Then when the fire had died down 4 of the 5 in that party smoked so sitting outside you got whiffs their cigarette smoke. Walking around the campground it appeared they were the only smokers, just our luck.

Luckily they left the next morning and since we were only 60 miles from home we could stay until the afternoon and enjoy Sunday morning and afternoon without being smoked out.

We burn alot of Oak tree wood, and man....whew! So we really have to check to see which way the breeze is going or else the Airstream gets it. Camp fires are cool, but they stink smoke.

If one does not like campfires or the other things that happen in the great outdoors, then one should hang out at Walmart and enjoy all the modern comforts.

kelvin, I'm with you. I'm allergic to smoke of any kind and used to smoke so am especially bothered by cigarettes and for some reason it seems the more someone is disturbed by it the more likely it blows their way. sigh so this is what I've learned...to always have a powerful fan at the ready to blow it away from me! otherwise my weekends get unwittingly ruined by other people.
