If you wait long enough someone will always shed new light on the subject.

New study released supports campfires.

Cheaper firewood at campgrounds could stop spread of bugs: Study | Canada | Travel | Calgary Sun

The emerald ash borer that has killed many trees mine include, but I believe there is a myth about spreading the problems with them as I have cut many down then split for fire wood, if the trees are dead the borer has fled to some place else. I have never found one in trees I have cut down peal the bark off you will see where they were they do not bore into trunk. If tree was cut green they will be their.

I like a nice campfire too, my wife couldn't care less. She sits in the AS and reads her books or watches TV. I sit quietly by the fire and watch the sun go down, along with my blood pressure. It's very calming, I don't know why, but it sure starts me thinking about a lot of things. I don't think I'd enjoy a trip without at least one fire.

I prefer to bring my own wood. I have cut several trees in my yard and I have a good supply of quality firewood. I'm burning the cherry tree right now, 2+ years aged. There's very little smoke and I don't build a huge fire. If there's a lot of wind I won't build one either. I'm considerate of my neighbors and would never smoke up the camp.

we have a fire in the morning and evening/night. We cook over the fire; coffee in the AM and meat at evening and drinks later. We have had this AS 4 years and NOT used the stove and the previous 5 years and boiled h2o once.
Propane and charcoal doesn't taste as good as wood when cooking.

It would be great to find a list of campgrounds that don't allow campfires (or at least have a "no fires" section). Anyone know of one?

There's a big difference between a "campfire" and a "smudgepot", the latter deserving of our vitriol. It never fails that our neighbors will create something worthy of smoking sausages right outside our bedroom window and leave it unattended well after dark...[emoji34]

Friends have introduced us to the smokeless wonders of the SoloStove and we have a Flame Genie, both of which allow us to enjoy a personal campfire as long as we desire, let it burn out, and not be a nuisance to our neighbors. The added bonus to the FG is that it uses wood pellet fuel; cheap, plentiful and you can travel anywhere in the country without restriction. Click image for larger version

If you feel you can afford one, I heartily recommend them! They are amazing!
