I Feel the Heat

No campfire?

Would this be a reasonable facsimilie - at about 140 decibels?

Add to the sensitivity topics like guns, politics and religion, campfires?!

I like 'em, I don't like smoke in my eyes or lungs, but is this something to get so worked up about? I do like Protagonist's attitude about have a sense of the absurd—gets me through a lot.

What an odd thread..I mean it started simply enough and actually it still seems pretty simple. "Does anyone else hate campfires?" Just hard to believe nearly 300 posts...

Does anyone else hate rain? But I guess I should start a different thread for that. (-:

You know....after reading through all this I've come to the conclusion that the only reasonable thing to do is sell the Airstream return to backpacking. I wonder if I can get a knapsack that will fit a generator?

Probably not, but you might find a bike trailer to hook up behind a mountain bike that will fit your generator:

A campfire makes sense when it is what one is cooking upon. And boiling water for clean-up. And a constant worry no matter how large or how well-built. I have built, maintained and extinguished more than my share and really don't miss them. Now, a contained fire (a cooker of some sort) fits pretty well with trailer camping. But a campfire, per se, is just more trouble than it's worth. I always wonder about those who haul 400# of firewood from home if there is no practical use for the thing. There seem to be those out there who spec TV's based on this assumed load.

Open fires near vehicles containing refined petroleum, gas and liquid, is just playing with fire (literally). I thought that was why we had RVs, so as not to have to take on this burden, this risk . . for it is.

On the other hand, a campfire for a large group on a chilly evening, okay, that still makes sense. Well away from everyone else. And every thing else.

Can't we all just sit around a campfire to discuss this?

In all seriousness, this has been a fun thread to read and consider. I like to think that there is enough space in this great and vast country for us to all find our preferred camping environment!

Hope to see you out there!

Roy

"I thought that was why we had RVs, so as not to have to take on this burden, this risk . . for it is."

I for one took up “trailer camping” because I got tired of putting up tents in the rain, crawling in and out of them in the rain, sleeping on the ground in the rain, being soaking wet and having to take the camp down in the rain. I have decided that at 62 comforts is more important than getting hung up on tradition. I still like to have a camp fire, but decided that a gas fire pit was more in line with my new camping life style. As long as my camping neighbors use common sense and courtesy I have no problem with them having real wood fires.
