Devils Tower Wyoming Camping
Going to take TinyTin to visit Devils Tower in Wyoming. Plan on being there the week of Labor Day. Any campground suggestions?

If you want something close by, in May we stayed at a nice KOA that is located right at the entrance to the Devils Tower National Monument.

There is a NPS campground right on the National Monument site. It's nothing fancy, but decent. I don't recall there being any electric available. There are lots of big cottonwoods for shade.
I remember staying there when I was a kid, probably around 1972. Racoons got into our trash and made a big mess. My first lesson in securing your trash at night.

Yep, what Thalweg said.. NPS (no hookups) or KOA, both right at the entrance.
We toured the monument on way to Glacier in June. Nice area. Did not stay at these campgrounds, but checked them out. We stayed at Custer SP, a couple of hours away... that park is huge, very National Park-ish, with many scenic drives, historic buildings, etc.

The family and I just spent a couple of days there in July. We stayed at the KOA and it could not have been more convenient. The park entrance is just feet away - particularly useful if you want to participate in the evening stargazing program that they run at night. The KOA was the original set location for the Close Encounters movie and the camp host plays the movie every night on the outdoor deck of the office. You can even climb up into the boulder field just like Richard Dreyfus if you are so inclined. There is a big camp store that you will need since there is not much else out that way. I would include a picture if I could figure out how to do it - needless to say, we will be going back again as soon as possible.

Devils Tower
Not sure how close or how long you want to be at Devils Tower. The KOA is very nice and convenient. However, we like to use Spearfish SD City Campground for our base when in the area. This is a great campground located in a city park. A lot of activities and close to Sturgis, Rapid City, Deadwood and Devils Tower. Don't forget to check out the Opera House in Spearfish. A lot of great local talent.
Enjoy Your Trip

Hulett, Wyoming!
Never camped anywhere around there but I picked up a load of lumber in the small town of Hulett not far from Devils Tower. Took the slow tour going through town and it struck me as one of the places I want to revisit on vacation! A few restaurants, a few bars and a few campgrounds. Just the right amount of tourism influence and nothing real busy compared to anywhere around Deadwood or Lead, SD.

We recently spent the night at the National Park Campground right at the base of the Tower. Beautiful night, thunderstorms and all. No hookups, so no air conditioner. It was a warm day, and the evening cooled down nicely. Nice, clean bathrooms. First come, first served. We arrived around 1pm, and there were lots of sites still available at the end of the day, which was a Monday. The name of the campground is Belle Fourche; the river runs through it. 35 foot max RV length. Every site is a "pull through" ....more like a "pull out." This place suffices, especially if you have solar and can be off the grid, and don't need AC. Make sure you take the mile long hike around the base of the Tower. It's lovely.

Just remember that many campgrounds are full over holiday weekends. It may be too late to make a reservation.

We also loved the Spearfish City campground...and stayed a few extra days there rather than moving on as we had planned!

Belle Fourche
Last summer we stayed at a State Recreation Area near Belle Fourche SD. It is right on the lake and only a short drive north of the Black Hills. We stayed for several nights and did day trips when we weren't just relaxing by the lake, including a day trip over to Devils Tower.
