We are planning on towing my Spitfire racecar to Road America in May for our big national vintage race (we camp at the track), and towing our 1964 Spitfire (if we have not sold it by then) to the national Triumph meet in Valley Forge in July (hopefully can camp near the host hotel). Whee!!!

So far we have been to the Can Opener Rally at Topsail Hill in Santa Rosa Beach, FL and Ft. Wilderness at Disney World (big surprise) and will be going to the Springstream Rally in April. We will be camping at the state park on St. George Island, FL over the Memorial Day Weekend and probably FDR State Park, GA in June and then back to Ft. Wilderness for the July 4th holiday weekend. August and September are tentative right now, but October will be back to Ft. Wilderness for Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party and if it doesn't conflict, we'll be at the Fall Leaf Thing Rally in Hiawassee, GA. In December, we'll spend the week prior to Christmas at...you guessed it, Ft. Wilderness!

So many possible trips on annual passes, so little vacation time!

Destinations 2007

I suspect that much of my travel is going to be somewhat spur of the moment this year. Since I don't relish the idea of surviving the humidity (even with air conditioning), I won't be attending the WBCCI International Rally this year. At the present, my plans are rather definite for the following:
  • Midwest Forums Rally at Moraine View State Park, Leroy, IL in early June (only 58 miles from home so can't miss this one)
  • Rocky Mountain Vintage Airstream Club Rally, Breckenridge, Colorado, in late July. This rally is among my favorites, and this year it is in a region that I have been wanting to spend more time exploring for several years.
  • Region 7 Rally, Huron, South Dakota in early August. Most of the time, this rally has been too close to my first day of school, but this year it works almost perfectly. My plan is take the slow path home with this being one of my last major stops before arriving home in Illinois from the Rocky Mountain Vintage Airstream Rally.
I am almost afraid to hope, but it looks like my 1975 Cadillac is going to be ready to tow the Minuet this year. It looks like I have finally located a set of four original rims that can be trued and straightened with minimal concern for durability (the wheel specialist with whom I have been working remarked that these are among the best that he has seen in the past three or four years). I may be "puting the cart before the horse" so to speak, as I have already bought a set of NOS metal tire valves for these original rims in anticipation that the straightening/turing process will be successful -- in the past, finding these unusually shaped tire valves has been one of my biggest heacaches with both my former 1974 Eldorado coupe and my current 1975 Eldorado convertible. If the straightening/truing process is successful, my plan is to have the wheels powder coated in a blue that is a near 100% match for the car's color -- will then add plain center caps as used on Chevrolet/GMC K5 Blazer/Jimmys of the era and narrow chrome/polished stainless steel beauty rings.

Touring South Dakota

Greetings Chaplain Kent!

He will recreate the walk up Mt Katahdin but this time will carry his daughter.
The Maine trip is planned but anyone have tips for South Dakota?
Depending upon when you plan to be in South Dakota during the summer, there are several activities that I have enjoyed in past trips:
  • If you will be there during the Fourth of July holiday, the Mount Rushore fireworks display is a "must see" in my opinion -- reservations are a must, and I would recommend the Gray Line tour that drops you off near the visitor center rather than trying to drive up to the Monuement (reservations sell out quickly for this tour so early reservations are advisable) -- these tours depart from many of the nearby campgrounds.
  • The evening lighting ceremonies for both Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse are also well worth the time/cost involved. The show at Mount Rushmore tends to be a bit more flashy, but both are unique in their own ways.
  • A visit to the Mount Rushmore area wouldn't be complete without a day or more spent touring Custer State Park -- this is one of the highlights any time that I visit.
    • The Game Lodge is one of my favorite stops -- particularly at meal time.
      • I had never been there during breakfast prior to my last trip. Their breakfasts are delicious, and the Buffalo Sausage is excellent!
      • A must try for lunch or dinner is the excellent home-made Buffalo Stew or Buffalo Chili -- I think the chili is my favorite, but either are excellent choices!
      • While at the Game Lodge, one of my favorite activities has been the Bufallo Safari Jeep Tour and Chuckwagon -- an expensive sidetrip, but one that will never be forgotten -- it was a long day, but the memories are beyond compare!
    • The Blue Bell Lodge is another of my priority stops. While I enjoyed the Hay Ride/Chuckwagon Dinner, if making a choice, I would opt for the Bufallo Safari (I have hay fever so this was fun but not so enjoyable due to the allergy aggravation).
  • Wall Drug is one of the tourist traps along the road, but it is one that I almost never miss (RV parking has been a headache every time that I have stopped, but I still stop!). It never ceases to amaze me how much has changed since my first visit in 1969!
  • If you are in South Dakota during early August, the Region 7 WBCCI Rally will be held in Huron, SD -- I am planning on stopping there on my way back from the Rocky Mountain Vintage Airstream Club Rally.
Have fun planning your trip! The Internet has certainly made the process more interesting -- with less wait time to actually see the travel information!

Kevin

The big trip starts in early August and will take me to my sons wedding in Dallas, North to Nebraska - I grew up in Grand Island, on to northern Minnesota - Lived near Cass lake several years, west to Idaho, and trickle down to the Balloon fest in October. I plan to return to Salt Springs Florida by early December. This trip will remove the hot air balloon ride from my list of "Must Do's"

Alaska this May

Greetings sarmeier,
Wow, sounds like a great trip. I would have liked to caravan along if I had things more organized on the home front.

Were I to do this trip, I think I would take 2 months, eliminate Fairbanks and spend lots of time camping and fishing on the spit in Homer.

Probably the first will be the CBR in April, with miscellaneous local weekenders after that, and then the International in July. I am retiring from my job on the first week in July, so we'll more than likely take the ...long way... home from Georgia.

Saw your Alaska info. Great plan! we are in the process of planning the same trip, leaving mid-June up the Alaska highway and back to the lower 48 Sept. In your research any obstacles I need to watch out for? See you on the road. Coot
