Dear Texas/Oklahoma Weekend Warriors

We're in the DFW Area and are anxious to tap into the adventures of our fellow weekenders. So if you have any great state parks, private parks, etc. you'd be willing to share -- within say three hours of Dallas/Ft. Worth, we would sure love to know about them. We love the water, so the more the better. We've hit the usuals: Tyler SP, Lake Bob Sandlin, Mineral Wells, PK, Dinosaur Valley, Twin Coves, The Vineyards, Beaver's Bend (a little far for weekends)...any thoughts on bordering Parks in Ok or Ark?

Come to Ray Roberts. The Johnson Creek Branch Park on the North side of the lake. Clean!!!and your right on the water. More facilities on the lake on the South side....but, I like the North side. Then there are the parks right on Lake Texoma...Texas side on Hwy 377. Nice.

Our favorite area park is Lake Murray State Park in Oklahoma. It is about 30 miles north of the state line on I35. The most popular campgrounds are often full and reservations are not available. We enjoy camping there in the fall, winter and spring. The web site claims 8 campgrounds, 450 Campsites but our favorite is Elephant Rock and apparently everyone else's favorite too. It is often full at popular times.

Lake Travis and Kerrville

A little further than 2-3 hours, but....

1. Pace Bend park on Lake Travis, west of Austin. See website at http://www.co.travis.tx.us/tnr/parks/pace_bend.asp. On the west side it might be difficult to find a place for your trailer - however these are beautiful sites generally on or close to a cliff overlooking the lake (don't bring little kids!). We have a 4x4 and ventured down to a site overlooking Gracy Cove (see park map), but the effort isn't for the faint of heart. On the other hand, the east side is gentle, sloping and grassy. Lots of good places to park. HOWEVER, everything is boondocking-only unless you want to stay in the cramped little RV area that has no views of anything. See pic of our site below

2. not on a lake, however in the middle of a fun area: Kerrville City Park. See website: http://www.kerrville.org/index.asp?NID=318. Clean, open spaces. Lots of deer. Easy drive to all the hill-country places to see.

By the way, we LOVE the Vineyards. Its the only place we regularly see other Airstreams. We were just there last week.
