Davy Crockett Birthplace State Park Camping

We are looking at this as a couple of day base camp in a couple of weeks for exploring parts of the Smoky Mountains.... has anyone camped here?

Or does anyone have a suggestion for state park, or COE park in that general vicinity?

Thanks
Dana

Or is that too far east?

Or is that too far east for Smoky Mountain exploration? Haven't spent any time in that area to speak of. Would like to make drive w/o Airstream down to Asheville to see what all the fuss is about :-)

If you can get to Davy Crockett by Thursday night you can come over to Jonesboro for the international storytelling festival which starts on Friday runs through the weekend. I checked yesterday and there were still nine sites available at Davy Crockett .Jonesboro to Asheville is as pretty a piece of interstate as you'll find in the eastern United States (okay I said interstate.)

Just south of Asheville you can pick up the Blue Ridge Pkwy. and run about 40 some odd miles right into the Smoky Mountains national Park.

We frequent the Davidson River national Forest campsite just outside of Brevard North Carolina. From there it's just a twisty few miles up to the Blue Ridge and west toward the Smokies. The campsite is mostly dry camping except for one loop with electricity but it is situated in tall trees and gives you a feeling of quiet solitude as each loop is small and self-contained. Hot showers and a trout stream runs through it. Lots of mountain biking, nice college town very close AND nearly 300 waterfalls in Transylvania County alone....

Thanks Twobikes.

we will probably not be over there until 14th and 15th but it looks like that drive from Jonesboro to Asheville on the Interstate and then maybe back north on 23 would be a great day of it on one of those days before we head back west toward Bowling Green to see our son.

Dana

edit well upon closer inspection on google maps... funny what a difference zooming out makes, it appears that I-26 and 23 are one in the same.... so we'll just save some time coming and going
