Red face Damages sidewall & Tire Change due to "Evil Rock" with pics....

Heading home today and just pulling into the storage lot to put "Twinks" to bed after a nice 200 mile drive from the Airstream dealership where she just got serviced and literally - 50 yards from her parking spot, anxious to tuck her into bed...

...and as I turn into the lot I hear a "Bang" as I smack right into an "evil rock" (I swear it jumped) that the RV Resort owners have placed to keep folks from driving on the lawn with their tires as they turn into the storage lot...

So - luckily, I'm just in the storage lot (vice on some busy road) so I pull over near my parking spot and straighten "Twinks" out.

I run over to the camp sites and pull out a few boards that folks use in the campground for leveling (left my leveling blocks back home).

I loosen the lug nuts on the tire I wish to change then drive the right rear tire up onto the boards so to elevate the damaged front right tire...

Next I place the spare onto the axel, hand tightening the lugs first, then with my breaker bar I get them good and snug so the tire is nice and even to the brake drum...

Next step is to just drive off of the boards and torque the lug nuts with my torque wrench that I travel with and like magic, I've just swapped "Twinks" shoes in fifteen minutes, and better yet - I have practice for if this happens out in the "wild"...

So - I take a close look at my tire and see a nice puncture wound from the hunk of quartz that attacked me just fifteen minutes prior...

UNDER COVER OF DARKNESS, replace the "evil rock" with the sabotaged tire and a sign...."no tires on the lawn".

And with my pride "no worse for wear" - I place "Twinks" to bed.

In the morning I'll order a replacement tire, have her mounted and balanced and swap her with the spare next weekend, but this time I'll make sure I have my leveling blocks with me...

I will be asking if we can place a small "flag" there or something so it doesn't happen to anyone else...

What I did learn from this was....

1. We all should always have everything with us in preperation to swap tires in case one is damaged on the road. Lucky for me, I had my sockets, breaker bar, torque wrench, portable air compressor/battery tender - yet I forgot my leveling blocks...

2. As I mentioned, I had my portable air compressor with me, good thing too as before I departed from Maryland from New Jersey this morning - I checked the air pressure in the main tires, but did not check the spare. The spare once mounted required 12 pounds to fully inflate...

3. Wood works well in leiu of my plastic leveling blocks (as many of us use wood when camping), but if I was on the side of the road vice in a campsite I might have had to pull out the jack. Keep all tools with you regardless of the distance of one's travels when towing their Airstream...

4. And the most important lesson of all, don't relax till your Airstream is safely tucked away - as we all are told in High School Drivers Ed - most accidents occur near the home...

Very sharp 'stream

30/31 is my fave

Get used to this routine... you'll be doing it a lot with those wheels...

Should we turn this into a 'get rid of that Goodyear Marathon garbage' thread?

Yup, sure ... clearly all the fault of the tires ... yadda, yadda, yadda.

Or: they just shouldn't allow rocks on lawns, or roadsides, or .... yadda, yadda, yadda.

In the end, a good result - glad it didn't happen to you far from home ... looks to me as if you handled it perfectly (except for the spare needing a little air, and you had the compressor to deal with that). Good job.

Hopefully my post will help someone else too, and all those miles I have under my belt to have this occur, right next in my own storage lot...
