Cruising the Eastern Sierras

Almost every trip we've taken in the Rollertoaster has been vastly improved with input from our trusty forum folks.
So here's another one for you:
On Oct. 2, we're heading out over Tioga pass and plan to stay our first night in Tuolumne Meadows (drop-in sites only) and then continue over the pass and down 395 to the June Lakes Loop. We'll spend 2 nights there at Silver Lake, then ??? for the next 4 days.
Any good traveling or sight-seeing suggestions from our well-traveled friends? We plan to head up to Bridgeport on the 8th to stay at Honeymoon Flats on Robinson Creek near Twin Lakes. Then we'll go north to Hope Valley for a night, then over Carson Pass and down to Jackson for the Norcal Rally (yay!)
This is all new territory for us (beyond Tioga) and any ideas would be very appreciated, as usual.
We'll have a kayak, bikes, and 3 dogs with us.
Many thanks!

Janet, I was at Silver lake at the end of July and saw this. Heading North from there I stopped at Bodie, a really cool Ghost town! It is 13 miles back in from 395 and the last 3 are dirt roads, but the roads are in good shape. See ya in Jackson.

Wow what a cool looking rig. Does that pretty little thing in the background belong to you?
How did you like Silver Lake? Do you have any other campgrounds you'd recommend in the vicinity?
Look forward to meeting you and your crew in a few weeks~don't forget your poker face!

My favorite part of the world

Hi Janet, we have a condo in Mammoth and have hiked, backpacked, and horse packed all over the Eastern Sierra and it is really a wonderful place to explore......I have never had a trailer there so I don't really know much about the campgrounds......do you want hookups or will you be boondocking? You might want to take in Devil's Postpile and Rainbow Falls which is on Mineret Road past Mammoth Ski are (you may have to take a bus but maybe not this late in the year). It can snow anytime after Labor Day so watch the weather.....I am sure you know Tioga Pass closes after the first big snow....The Sierra Unit of the WBCCI is having a boondocking rally this coming weekend at the Obsidian Domes (between Mammoth and June). Think they do in every year........There is so much to see and do.....stop in at the Visitor's Center in Mammoth. They are very helpful....Mammoth is a dormant volcano and the Scenic Loop is actually an escape route out of town in case of an eruption (or so I am told). We are actually going to Mammoth this weekend--my husband likes to bicycle there and I just love being there.......have a great time.....our Airstream is still under construction so we will be condoing it this trip.....paula

PS: You will be at about 10,000 feet in Tuolumne Meadows and the descent down Tioga Pass is serious. Mammoth Lakes town is at 8,000 and the top of the gondola is 11,000 or so feet....so there is some elevation to take into consideration......enjoy! Paula

We just went to Mammoth and Silver Lake campground last month. Had a great time. Great weather. Beautiful scenery. Wish we were still there.

My husband made a webpage of some of our trip photos.

Adventures in Airstreaming

Yes, I caught, cleaned and cooked the fish myself.

Paula, thanks so much for great info. from an "almost" local! We know we'll have a great time exploring, and will keep the altitude and changing weather in mind, and will try to use the resources you've mentioned.
I love traveling at this time of year, with an eye on the weather of course...
When will we get to see you again--and your refurbished beauty? I know it's going to knock our socks off.
Take care!

Great shots, Virginia! Switch those fishies out for a couple of martinis and we're back at Casitas!
Getting inspired here...

Hi Janet,

Steve and I just went to the area this past weekend..beautiful weather in the Hope Valley.. we took our dog Cody and hiked in the National Forest, around Willow Creek near Horse Canyon, and later stopped along the Silver Creek area and had a picnic near the creek, a little low, but still flowing!..the aspens are just starting to turn yellow..beautiful photo ops for you and Terry!!..suggestion: bring good hiking boots if you like to hike!..and your fishing poles..tons of people were in the streams. but barbless lures and hooks have to be used: real catch and release program in force!!..paula

Thanks Paula.
I also unearthed a couple of other threads I knew I had read at some point...
They popped up in that area at the bottom of the page in the "similar threads" section (kind of a reverse search.)
Much helpful info. and I don't think we're going to have any problem finding much to see and do, including hiking.
See you soon!

Hi Janet,

Ditto, I just noticed the bottom of the page too of similar threads..see you in a couple!!

Another note, be very careful where you drive your vehicle..we were in an area where we thought we could take our truck, but there was a sign posted on requirements for traveling on certain off road areas that will only handle atvs and jeeps..we backed out quickly when we noticed the hilly terrained path ahead of us!

During the 80's we lived in Washoe Valley just north of Carson City. That was in close proximity to the Mammoth area...our favorite vacation/camping area. Visit the Visitor Center in Mammoth. Our kids were young when we were there and while there we were viewing the UNR seismographic display when we noticed the needle begin to jump around. 7 seconds later the building began to shake . We actually were watching an earthquake at Convict Lake (another favorite camp area) 7 miles south before it reached us! Paula mentioned the Hope Valley on 88. You should be there at the height of the Fall colors display. It is very spectacular.

Eastern Sierras

As Paula said, the SNU will be at Obsidian Dome this weekend. One of our members who is a Wilderness Supervisor for Inyo found this spot for us.

Sierra Nevada Unit WBCCI rally at Obsidian Sept 2008

October 16 - 19 we will be in the Hope Valley area off Hwy 88 at Blue Lakes in a dispersed site

Seirra Nevada Unit Blue Lakes Rally October 2008

We have also held several rallies at Twin Lakes and taken day trips to Bodie. One of our members is a supervisor at Bodie.

Sierra Nevada Airstreams Destinations

The weather can get a little iffy this time of year and you do have to be a little careful where you go if you head out on the gravel or dirt roads but it is a beautiful area and there are lots of great places to camp.

If you happen to be in our area during one of our rallies, you are always welcome.

Janet,
We were in the area during the Labor Day Weekend. We have a second home near Mono Lake. As some others have stated the weather can change for the worse very quickley. We had a big wind storm come thru the area on Sunday of the Labor Day Weekend, 70+ gusts. Two SOB's were blown over on 395,very sad. The lakes on the June Lake loop are all great for Kayaking, also try Mono lake around the south tufa area, but do it earily in the morning. Its great to paddle around the tufa.
If you are in the area around lunch or dinner try the Mobil gas station (sounds funny, but try it) The gas station is on hwy 120 just before it ends at 395.
Have fun.

Whoa Nelly Deli

Yes, this restaurant (Whoa Nelly Deli) is in the Mobil Station and the food is delicious...portions are huge......yes, see the Tufas at Mono Lake....there is so much to see.....and do.

Our Airstream is still under construction. Uwe is doing a fabulous job and it takes time to rebuild, redesign and renovate a Vintage trailer.....so we are being very patient.....am sure it will be well worth the wait and we will let everyone know when we she has her coming out party.......let us know how your trip goes, and be safe, Paula P not Paula W

PS: you can check online at www.area63productions.com then hit blog to see the progress.....p

We were there too. We stayed at Mono Village at Twin Lakes. The wind was incredible Labor Day weekend. We were lucky to have been parked when it hit. They closed 395 between Lee Vining and Bridgeport for an hour because it. The rest of the week was GORGEOUS! The deli at the Mobil Station is called Whoa Nellie Deli...it's world renowned!.

Hey Janet, if you're going up to Hope Valley, you'll be going right by Genoa, almost. You'll be a week late for our Genoa Candy Dance craft faire, dang. Wally's Hot Springs, a mile south of Genoa would be a nice evening soak. Grover's Hot Springs in Markleville is more of a state park thing, they have camping there too. I wouldn't do Monitor pass in a longer rig, kinda windy and some steeper parts. Be sure to drop in some quarters in a Nevada casino and pay some of my state income tax for me.

Freshair, SierraBreeze...(Almost feels like we're already in the mntns.!) Thanks for your input. Diane, those links--and the SNU are loaded with just the info. we're looking for. And Neil, we'll go to the visitors center, but I'll pass on the watch-it-happen earthquake fun. Wow!

We'll definitely try to make it to Whoa Nelly's after surviving Tioga. Then down to June Lakes Loop and on to Mammoth area, back up through Bridgeport (maybe stay at the Mono Village camp at Twin Lakes-- or Honeymoon Flat on the same road.)

Not using Monitor Pass--or Ebbetts! We plan to continue to 88 and come over Carson Pass and into Jackson, stopping for a night in Hope Valley. We'll do mostly dry-camping with some full hookups toward the end of the trip.

Tom, I think we'll have some good kayaking days--or at least mornings. Thanks for the head's up about the winds.
And Perry, could you please send some of that tax money over the boarder? We kinda need it right now.

Thanks so much taking the time to share your info. and experiences. Besides being helpful, it makes the trip even more fun to plan.
How does the itinerary look so far?

Hi Janet, Here are some photos I took during our trip to Twin Lakes two weeks ago. Hope you enjoy! The pictures are:
1. Olmstead Point in Yosemite NP
2. Going down Tioga Pass
3. Looking back at Tioga Pass
4. Whoa Nellie Deli
5. Camp at Mono Village
6. Lower Twin Lake
7. Mono Village from the trail
8. Kayaking on Upper Twin Lake

The aspens should be showing their fall colors about the time you are there. They are especially beautiful up on Conway Summit looking toward Virginia Lakes. Some good photo ops for the Rollertoaster.
