The lakes on the June Lake loop are all great for Kayaking, also try Mono lake around the south tufa area, but do it earily in the morning. Its great to paddle around the tufa.
If you are in the area around lunch or dinner try the Mobil gas station (sounds funny, but try it) The gas station is on hwy 120 just before it ends at 395.
Have fun.
Tom
We were there too. We stayed at Mono Village at Twin Lakes. The wind was incredible Labor Day weekend. We were lucky to have been parked when it hit. They closed 395 between Lee Vining and Bridgeport for an hour because it. The rest of the week was GORGEOUS! The deli at the Mobil Station is called Whoa Nellie Deli...it's world renowned!.

Hey Janet, if you're going up to Hope Valley, you'll be going right by Genoa, almost. You'll be a week late for our Genoa Candy Dance craft faire, dang. Wally's Hot Springs, a mile south of Genoa would be a nice evening soak. Grover's Hot Springs in Markleville is more of a state park thing, they have camping there too. I wouldn't do Monitor pass in a longer rig, kinda windy and some steeper parts. Be sure to drop in some quarters in a Nevada casino and pay some of my state income tax for me.

Freshair, SierraBreeze...(Almost feels like we're already in the mntns.!) Thanks for your input. Diane, those links--and the SNU are loaded with just the info. we're looking for. And Neil, we'll go to the visitors center, but I'll pass on the watch-it-happen earthquake fun. Wow!

We'll definitely try to make it to Whoa Nelly's after surviving Tioga. Then down to June Lakes Loop and on to Mammoth area, back up through Bridgeport (maybe stay at the Mono Village camp at Twin Lakes-- or Honeymoon Flat on the same road.)

Not using Monitor Pass--or Ebbetts! We plan to continue to 88 and come over Carson Pass and into Jackson, stopping for a night in Hope Valley. We'll do mostly dry-camping with some full hookups toward the end of the trip.

Tom, I think we'll have some good kayaking days--or at least mornings. Thanks for the head's up about the winds.
And Perry, could you please send some of that tax money over the boarder? We kinda need it right now.

Thanks so much taking the time to share your info. and experiences. Besides being helpful, it makes the trip even more fun to plan.
How does the itinerary look so far?

Hi Janet, Here are some photos I took during our trip to Twin Lakes two weeks ago. Hope you enjoy! The pictures are:
1. Olmstead Point in Yosemite NP
2. Going down Tioga Pass
3. Looking back at Tioga Pass
4. Whoa Nellie Deli
5. Camp at Mono Village
6. Lower Twin Lake
7. Mono Village from the trail
8. Kayaking on Upper Twin Lake

The aspens should be showing their fall colors about the time you are there. They are especially beautiful up on Conway Summit looking toward Virginia Lakes. Some good photo ops for the Rollertoaster.

Janetb;

If you go to Mono Lake, it was the setting for a Clint Eastwood Movie. I don't remember which one but I'm sure somebody else can chime in with that info.

Uh huh. Gee--thanks for the reminder Paula.
I'm sure I'll somehow manage. But will Terry be able to handle the "coping mechanisms" that will be required?
Sure hope so.
So far the "lose the whine but not the wine" policy has gotten us through many adventures the last 31 yrs....
Alumanutz, I loved that movie! I wish they'd kept the set. It's the perfect eerie location.

Like I said, you will do fine. Just make sure you disengage the passenger side brake and carry a parachute......we are counting on you....p

We're back from a great trip--

--to the Eastern Sierra. Thanks to all the forum members who advised us on
places to visit, road conditions, etc. My wife (janetb) and I had a great trip,
maybe one of the all time best vacations. We left the Santa Cruz area with the intention of making Tuolumne Meadows for the first night, but as luck (and No Planning) would have it, the campground was closed. So on down Tioga Pass we went. We checked out Tioga Lake, empty but very windy with the approaching storm front, and only a few places to fit our 25 footer. Ellery Lake was likewise windy and cramped, so we went almost to the bottom of the
pass (without burning out the brakes) to Lee Vining Canyon, where we stayed in Aspen Grove county campground, deserted except for a few fishermen/deer hunters. We had a campsite right on Lee Vining Creek, sleeping to the sound
of the rushing water. The next morning we headed to Silver Lake on the
June Lake Loop and got a spacious site about 20 feet from the lake, with a grassy area for the dogs, and a place to leave our kayak on the beach for the whole week. By evening the storm finally started to come in--wild wind, rain, snow at 8,000', but really fun to be in the Airstream listening to music and
watching the action. The next morning broke beautifully fresh and clear,
and the rest of the week provided warm days and cold nights, perfect for
kayaking and hiking and doing nothing. We finished up the week at the
Jackson Rancheria Rally, really a perfect conclusion to our trip.
The first picture is on Lee Vining Creek, the rest are in the Silver Lake area.

Terry

Favorite playground

So glad you had a great trip to the Eastern Sierra.......and I am glad you didn't get snowed in......thanks for posting a report. I was wondering how you made out.......we can't wait to take our new old trailer to that area and I guess now it will be next year....we dropped in on the Sierra Nevada Unit rally at Obsidian Dome mid September (sans trailer) and it was chilly already....I know it must have been cold at night when you were in the area.....very nice photos........paula
