Crossing the Upper Pensiula

we are crossing the UP of Michigan west to east between July 17 and 1 August. Your ideas on "must see" attractions and camping spots would be greatly appreciated. We always get our best advice from other Airstreamers. Thanks Pat and Al

I've done it a few times as I used to live in MI. I will be doing it again next month. I would see Porcupine Mountain, The copper harbor area, Pictured Rocks area, and Tuaquamenon Falls SP, Sault St. Marie locks. Also the Whitefish Bay area (can't remember the park name, but there is a great shipwerck history museum up that way).

Possibly my favorite camp site is Twelve Mile Beach in Pictured Rocks Nat'l. Lakeshore. Get one of the sites on the Lake and it's heaven on earth. No hook-ups, so it's more of a boondocking deal but the setting can't be beat. It's on Lake Superior in a white birch forest.

There's a campground right on the Lake in Munising, operated by the city but you need a reservation in advance. The Great Lakes Shipwreck museum is worth the drive up to Whitefish Point. To get there, you go through the Tahquamenon Falls State Park with two campgrounds. Have a beer and a burger in Paradise. The National Forest campgrounds are primitive and cheap, and you have to drive in to them, but there's always room . We did a couple of overnights in them on our way around Lake Superior a few years ago. The drive out to point of the Keweenaw Peninsula is worth it, and takes you through copper country with mine tours and museums.

Thanks so much for the suggestions.

We stopped this afternoon at the Lovely Ontonagon Township campground and are mapping out our next few days. Maybe explore the Porkies tomorrow and maybe Copper Harbor after that We wil have to secure a place for the always busy weekends and then try to slip into Pictured Rocks during the week...Never enough time....

Copper Harbor is worth a stop.

We have found the local campgrounds in the Upper Peninsula to be perfectly adequate. We especially liked the ones on Lake Superior, of which there are many. They are inexpensive, with electric or electric/water.
