Cross Country Trip: Recommendations?
This september we are taking our AS cross country. If you are familiar with any of the state parks or campgrounds near here, could you please give us your advice? Also if you know of something on the way or at a destination that is a "cant miss" , we would love to hear it. thank you
Day 1 - leaving from Phila, PA
- Cuyahoga National Park (1 Night) - near Streetsboro, OH (i think this is a KOA campground that was recommended)
- Deerfield, IL - no campground needed. our sister trailer's owners have kindly offered accommodations for us.
- Sioux Falls, SD
- Badlands / Mt Rushmore Area - I think Custer, SD might be the right area or rapid city
Cody Wy/ Yellowstone / Grand Teton Areas (3 nights) - Fishing Village in Yellowstone and Coulter Bay near Grand Tetons ?
- Boise ID
- Chelmult, OR
- Redwood OR (maybe time to sleep.. depends on how much time we spend at Crate Lake only 2 1/2 hours to Orick/Redwoods)
- Orick, CA
- Sonoma, CA
- San fransico
- San Luis Obispo
- Las Vegas
- Grand Canyon / Zion NP area
- Santa Fe NM
- Oklahoma City
- Memphis / Nashville TN
- Roanoke, VA
- returning to phila, PA

Consider Oasis Las Vegas RV Resort. It is on the south end of the strip, a 5 star park, transportation is available to the hotel/casinos.

Mt Rushmore: we stayed at a KOA close to Devil's Tower. Some shade, grass-dirt sites, but the tower seems to rise right over you and the Belle Fourche runs at the edge of the campground. Showing of the movie nightly, fun especially for kids. We'd stay again, though certainly not a "star" resort. What a grand trip you'll be having! Here's to safe travels and memory-making campfires ~G

Nashville, TN
We had a great visit to a small state park just east of Nashville. Rustic, wooded. The sites are shady. It is called Cedars of Lebanon SP. We just parked for overnight and took the GrayLine tour of Nashville. We did not want to be in the midst of Nashville and it was an easy drive from Nashville. Out in the country. We did not need full hookups so this was fine for us. We had electricity and that was all we needed.

Santa Fe, NM
There are NM State Park campgrounds on the road above Santa Fe going to the ski area. Don't know about what facilities are there. There are a couple of comercial campgrounds east of Santa Fe just off of I-25. The Walmart on Cerrillos Road at the south end of Santa Fe always has several campers in the parking lot. Bandolier National Monument near Los Alamos has a nice campground and some really nice cliff dwellings to see.

We went to the area in 2008
http://www.airforums.com/forums/f42/...8-a-41824.html
And loved it so much we are headed back! We're not planning on Yellowstone this time, gonna focus on Jackson Hole/Grand Teton Nat Park.
Rough plans are to arrive in the area some time the week of AUG 23rd and be headed home around SEP 2nd. Well, I can't really say those are "plans", they are more like 'general targets'...we have been known to wander a bit...
Kinda thikin' about Coulter Bay dry camping for at least a few nights
I'm sure we will be posting a new thread...

Virginia Highland Haven - Airstream Only Park. Absolutely the best in the early fall.
If you like to do wineries - Tow your Airstream TO Chateau Morrisette and do the wine tasting - then sleep it off in the Airstream! After you wake up proceed to Va. Highland Haven! (Ask me how I figured THAT out! Hic.)

You didn't ask but I presume you'll head up I-81 to Philly. I'd rather have a root canal without anesthesia. Nothing like playing dodge ball with tractor trailers using YOU as the ball.
Take the Blue Ridge Parkway or Skyline Drive as long as you can. It's slow, it costs, it's winding 2 lane - but it's a night at the opera rather than a drunken saturday night at a Del Rio Dogfight!

Have you SEEN the biggest portion of the tour (the coast of CA?)? our entire goal (ok, well my entire goal) is to do wineries. great idea! thank you.
