cross country

I am looking for a great guide for doing a cross country this summer in my new trailer. Any suggestions? Thanks for any advice as I am new to the game.

We will have two kids in tow as well.

There are many places to go and things to see if you simply take I-40 West to the end, then go North to I-80, and return East.

Start here at the National Park Service "Shared Heritage Travel Itinerary" site:
Discover Our Shared Heritage Travel Itinerary Series - Heritage Education Services Program--A program of the National Park Service

And there's so many more resources through the NPS web site. Like the National Trails System: National Trails System
and http://www.nps.gov/nts/maps/National%20Trails%20map.pdf

It really would be quite a trip, and it's hard to know where to start. The links from others will be valuable. I've been reading some from the site below, which also has some fun info for individual locations.

Don't try to make reservations around plans. OK, maybe, if you're going to include a major attraction during the "HOT" season you may need to make reservations. We don't bother but we will project our next destination while on the way and make a phone call during the early afternoon. Once you have an idea how far you will be traveling you can look ahead in the Good Sam or Passport America books and find your spots. We use both and mostly have good luck. Enjoy your travels.

What a great way to spend the summer, try to take the U. S. Hwys and State Hwys instead of the Interstate. This will be fun so let the kids make some of the decisions.

We have found this website very helpful when planning our trips -
14 summers of RV road trip travels across the USA and Canada | Lolo's Extreme Cross Country RV Trips. It documents a family's annual cross country trips over 10 years.

We discovered National Scenic Byways and All American Roads can provide scenic day trips and can often be worked into route planning. Many of these roads are why we enjoy driving instead of flying to destinations:
