Crested Butte to Glenwood Springs CO the back way

We are taking a wandering 2 weeks in southern CO in a few weeks.

I have hunted in the Spring Creek area north of Gunnison several times.

I have crossed Cottonwood Pass towing a fifth wheel, coming in from Buena Vista to the Spring Creek reservoir area.

We want to spend a few days in Glenwood Springs.

Any opinions about taking Co Rd133 and Co Rd 12 from Crested Butte to Glenwood Springs?

We will be there in the middle of September.

Regards,

JD

A lot of CO Rd 12 is a dirt road - it's slow going, but graded (not 4x4). Mid - late September is when we usually get our first snows, pulling a trailer on a dirt road in wet/snowy conditions is not something I would want to do. So if you can be flexible, until you get here and know what the weather is doing when you plan on going there - it is a beautiful drive albeit slow.

CO Rd 12 does close when the weather sets in...check this out if you haven't already.

Good luck!

Shari

Good ideas from Inside Out.
The only thing I would add is to equip your tow vehicle with mud flaps if you have not already done so.
Towing your Airstream on a gravel road dents up the front. Mud flaps help but do not completely eliminate the problem.
I was born in Colorado and thought I had taken most every road. !2 road is new to me. Post about your experience.

I understand about the early snows. I have hunted during the early seasons in the Spring Creek valley and been snowed on.

I crossed Cottonwood pass on a cold and wet September night.

This route is supposed to offer some amazing mountain views and the Aspens should in in full color during our trip.

We will off-grid ready, so if we find a pretty spot we may stop for a bit.

Thanks for the input.

Regards,

JD
