Creepy RV Parks

I was dismayed to read about a park which had been operating like something out of "Psycho" and "Stalag 17." The manager had drilled holes in the women's showers, was spotted standing under any open rig windows late at night, would evict anyone who questioned his "rules,"
and ran the "camp" under an atmosphere of oppression.

This newby was kinda disheartened by this. This is the kind of crap I wanted to get away from!

Please tell me this is the exception....and not the rule.

EXCEPTION for sure. I'd be very surprise that his business will last for very long.

My fondest memories involve drunks on 4 wheelers and dirt bikes, conversations between almost deaf seniors outside my sleeping window until 2 am, and camp fires burning skunk wood, aka, elm (Usually brought from home and burned by the same almost deaf seniors that kept me awake with their nasal laughing half the night.) Peep holes and peepers would be an upgrade for some of my camping spot selections.

Maybe you'd best stay away from this RV Resort run by a bloke called "Norman."

Bates Beach Oceanfront Resort - RVing and Tenting Campground & Vacation Suite Rentals. Courtenay, BC.

Nah, Just kiddin', I'm sure it is a great spot - but still, watch out if there are a lot of stuffed animals in the office!

You've probably heard of it before but if not, check out
http://www.campgroundreviews.com

What you describe is an unusual exception in my opinion but a little research goes a long way. If you're going in blind you can always ask to look around a bit before committing to a nights stay. If its mostly highly rated in rvparkreviews I think you'll find it to be safe and satisfactory or better. I have felt very safe in nearly all the rv parks or campgrounds I've stayed at.

Try to get situated before it gets dark. Its easier to get into the spot, and you can get a better look at things. Sometimes a walmart stop among a decent bunch of RVs may be easier and safer than pulling into sleepy hollow rv park late at night.

Brian
I wonder if the shower curtains at the Bates' Resort are thematic?

I've been to some really weird motels, much scarier than anything we've seen in RV parks.

I'd be onboard with this.
There are ways and means, for sure.

We have spent almost 900 nights camped in Lucy, mostly in commercial campgrounds. What you have read about would definitely be the way out exception. Nearly all campgrounds, public or private, are safe and friendly places to spend the night. Most are very family oriented.

We have spent the night in a few campgrounds that we consider a little creepy, but not in the way that you read about. We have stayed in a few places that we consider "fugitive acres" where there are some rather suspicious characters who are probably evading the authorities, but won't do you any harm.

Get out there and camp, and just be cognizant of your surroundings.

I hear what you're saying...like the Bates Motel in Vale Oregon, or the Clown Motel in Tonopah Nv. Very scarier places!!!!

We were camping at new brighton beach in santa cruz last week. The rangers came by and told us to secure any camping gear at night as there were a few campers that showed up with no tents, sleeping bags, cooking items etc. Its a problem they have had in the past where these people show up, wait till you go to bed, then go thru the sites and take camping gear then head out. In our case, nothing was stolen, but it was a bummer to have to worry about it, since we had no bike locks or place to stow away some gear. I will carry some bike lock cables from now on to secure them while we are out roaming around town and at night.

absolutely. enticing a pervert to step over the line should be fairly easy. I would think a volunteer of the right shape in a short bathrobe might do it.
