Connecticut

We had a heck of a time finding someplace to camp while visiting relatives in Wallingford and then coming back through after our stay at Acadia. We ended up twice in Little City campground. The hosts were pleasant enough but the sites required extreme maneuvering to get into and then extreme leveling. The sites I got both times were essentially dirt, and it rained hard the second time so the leveling blocks settled into the mud.

It's curious that the Connecticut coast offers so few suitable camping opportunities. Unless I'm missing some.

By the way, we camped at Blackwoods in Acadia NP which was fine despite lack of hookups. The major problem was all of the pine sap on the ground. Our shoes and sandals were sticky for the four days we were there and the poor dogs had sticky paws. If only we had had some goo begone.

OTOH, nothing can compare with the view from Cadillac mountain.

I use this website a lot for finding campgrounds in unfamiliar places.

We have the same issue. My daughter lives near West Haven. When we visit her while towing we camp at Kettletown State Park, about 20 miles away. I've not found any camping spot closer that I want to stay at.

Depending on what you like in a campground, we have found these to be pretty good. Nelson's family campground in East Hampton, Ct. Seaport Campground in Stonington, Ct. And Lone Oak in East Canaan. Lone oak is a really busy place with lots of golf cart traffic. But their bathhouse is spotless and the location is pretty even if the sites are just ok. I've heard good things about Kettletown, too, although we've never been there.

Not too far from Wallingford is this little gem that hangs off a boatyard/marina and has some sweet riverside spots: http://www.portlandriversidemarina.c...ound/index.htm

Only downside - no sewer sites OR dump station so you need to head back down 91 a few exits to a rest area near Middletown to dump.

But the sites are large, the river is lovely and it's fairly close to Wallingford.

Much further away in the Quiet Corner (northeast CT by the MA border) is one of our faves in CT - an Army COE site on the Thompson dam. Really lovely.

Highly recommend the AllStays app for searching out new places. Let me know if you'd like more info. Good luck!
