Composting & Vegetables on the Road

One thing we have missed on the road is fresh home grown veggies.

So today I decided to remove the cover on the back bumper storage. Then I drilled several 1/4 inch holes all in the bottom tray and we used the compost from our toilet and some potting soil from home depot to fill the tray. The next phase is to get some seeds from SeedSavers and plant them. The holes will let the water drain properly. And with our bike rack on the rear, it should help the plants support themselves.

Potting soil can be heavy. If you go this route a mix of 1/3 compost 1/3 peat moss or even better coco coir and 1/3 vermiculite would be better. Have you given any thoughts to an hydroponic system?

The new garden will be close to the water tank, so you could add an irrigation system too! Or better yet install a 12 volt pump at the grey water tank discharge and re-route that to the garden.

If I had thought of something along these lines earlier I could have saved myself a lot of work. I should have just put in a potato patch aft rather than fixing the bumper leak.

On the off-chance that this isn't an April Fool's joke, the notion of growing food for human consumption in compost made from human waste is a recipe for illness. It's a very third-world thing to do.

Dung Beatles: This really works out well! We have been using these gourmet scavengers for several years now...one piece of advice; don't leave the seat up when sleeping! (they tend to sneak out when the sun goes down and can do damage to your food supply) You also need to use a strainer on end of dump hose for black water so you don't loose the little buggers...just saying be careful!
