Colorado to Moab-- looking for highway tips!

Hello All!
We're finally on the road, left Canada yesterday and we're currently driving through Kansas. We are planning on being in Crestone CO by tomorrow, then heading to Moab UT on Sunday. Google says we can go up via Hwy 50 which joins I-70 or down via Hwy 160 -- we are wondering if anyone has done either route and has suggestions? On the map 160 looks like it is in mountainous passes so we wonder about switchbacks and other hazards... LOL. Any advice you have is greatly appreciated!

Scenic Hwy

Just make sure you take Highway 128 off of Rt 70 into Moab. It follows the CO river, and trust me, you won't be going more than 45 miles an hour down that road. The scenery is spectacular. You'll keep hitting your brakes to gaze at the majestic beauty that completely surrounds you. Definitely a drive you won't want to miss!
Safe travels to you

From Crestone, 50 to I70 looks shortest and most convenient. Watch the weather and let it be your guide. We would probably take 160, but a visit to Mesa Verde is on our todo list and a few switchbacks would be fun, just not in ice and snow. For what it's worth, my brother is storing his trailer for a few days so he does not have to drive that route with it. Take care and drive safe.

Hwy 160 has two passes, both are steep and curvy. The road is good and large trucks and RVs pass over it safely many times a day provided the weather is good.
If you don't like steep and curvy, Hwy 50 to I 70 is the way to go plus it is the more direct route. I agree about the back road to Moab, it is very scenic and follows the Colorado River. Take the exit off I 70 just past the Utah line. There are couple of narrow curves but they are on the inside of the road and you are on the outside. It is realistically marked 45 mph.

Check on cotrip.org for road conditions before you go anywhere as we have had snow for the last two days and both I-70 and 160 (Wolf creek Pass) got it.

128 is one of the most spectacular rides in the country. It literally brought a tear to my eye.
It was at that moment I decided that my ashes will one day be spread along this stretch of glory.

Agree 100% on taking 128 south into Moab. First time we did it in a car we towed behind a MoHo. We stopped at a pull off and met a person I recognized from TV, a world traveler. He and his wife were doing what we all do, touring. We talked a bit and he said that "this is the most beautiful road I've ever been on, and I've been on and seen a lot". We totally agree and when in Moab we go up and down the road several times while in Moab.

Your route sounds fine, we've done it in reverse in a F350 and 30', no issues, except on 128 not too many places to pull off with a trailer except in some river side no hook up campgrounds.

If the weather is bad I would consider going back east to I25 and north up to I70. I think the route you are describing includes wolf creek and red mountain passes. Both are great in the summer not but so good when snow packed and pulling your AS. There are some tight turns go over both passes. If you are gonna be stopping overnight around Grand Junction there is a real clean rv park at the 70 business exit(Clifton) just before getting into GJ. I've stayed there a couple of times this summer. Starbucks close by.. If into classic and antique cars, Allen classic car Museum is not far off 70 in Grand Junction and is a must see. I just bought some acreage around Powder Horn and plan on spending more time there (Just not during Ice and snow). Have a great trip. Its Beautiful Country!!!

If you are visiting Mesa Verde, there is a nice small campground about 10 miles away in Cortez called Sundance RV Park. 800 880-9413. Walking distance to shopping and restaurants.

Crestone?
Take Saguache County Road T west to CO 17 south to Hooper, turn right (west) to Center - stay on that it will get you to US 160 in Del Norte - continue from there.

These are passes on highway 160.
Hwy 50 has only Monarch pass to deal with. It is not as steep and curvy as those on 160.
From Crestone back east to I 25 is at least a 100 mile detour and you still have to deal with the high mountains approaching the Eisenhower tunnel under Loveland Pass and Vail Pass on I-70.
You don't want to drive on snowpack in the mountains if you can help it. If you get snow while you are en route, best bet is to hole up until they clear the road. Early season snows melt fast.

And Red Mountain is on 550 between Silverton & Ouray, not on 160. Wolf creek is the only major pass on 160.

Thanks for all your suggestions!! We ended up taking the advice of Hwy 128 along the Colorado and were NOT disappointed! It was absolutely stunning.... the lush, meandering Colorado and the red rock cliffs were impressive. I highly recommend it!!

Agree! Don't take the usual road in to Moab at Crescent Junction, take 128. It's spectacular!

A vague recollection of highway 666

I remember that I liked traveling that road in a car.
