Colorado State Parks/Rocky Mnt Natl Park

So i am in the planning stages for about a 3week trip to explore some of Colorado.

We will leave central texas and head into okla with stops at the wichita mountains; boiling springs state park and then to black mesa state park....
all headed to enter into Colorado and head up the east side.

then near lamar is John Martin lake state park...looks interesting..

then north going towards jackson lake state park, sort of north from Fort Morgan.

then over to Loveland and Boyd Lake State Park...

this will get us close to RMNP....and then

where is the best places{s} to park as a base to then explore the surrounding area???

after a few days in the estes park area we will turn south and towards connecting up with US 285 around Evergreen. and explore a few state parks in this area

then heading south towards the black gunnison national park

and then down US 550 to Durango...

so what should i miss or not miss in this swing thru Colorado??

thanks

When ARE you going to be there, cuz we're headed toward Colorado right after Moraine View mid-June!?

We have read here that the State Parks in CO are pricey, so are going to try to avoid them. We have no trajectory planned as yet, it's way too early for us to do that , but that leaves us quite flexible.

Can't be of any help to you, but wanted to say Hi. If our paths are going to cross, would love to see you guys,

Maggie

Horsetooth Reservoir, very near Fort Collins, has several county run campgrounds, we just stayed at the South unit. A couple dozen full hook-up sites, another 50 or so water/electric sites. Reasonable commute to Estes Park.
