Beautiful part of the state, but not a great time for campers: News Release: Plague

Not sure of the schedule for reopening the campground...but check it out before you go ~ you may want to check out some of the other nearby Parks this year

Shari

Thanks Shari, I had seen that. I should have mentioned that I am considering a summer job there on the interpetive staff. So I wanted to see who had been there before my phone interview monday morning.

I suggested the monument as one of the places we'd like to see again on our upcoming vacation. The campground is pretty small (though it might do fine for Shari's rig, right Shari?). However, down at the base of the north entrance at Fruita is Colorado River State Park, which is probably where we'll stay (assuming that I get our Airstream all fixed up by then!).

Rodney,

If you get the job, I'm sure I'll be stopping by at some point!

The park looks attractive from the highway, but unfortunately I couldn't take enough time on my one visit to appreciate it. I do like the fact that it's close to Grand Junction (trailer stuff available!) and the dinosaur quarry over in Rabbit Valley, not to mention all the ancient Indian stuff to the south. And if needed, there is scheduled air service into Grand Junction. Both the Forest Service and BLM have well-stocked offices there, too.

It doesn't take long to see it all, and it looks better from the valley. When the Colorado National Monument grows up, it wants to be Canyonlands NP...or maybe Arches (both of which are only 90 minutes away from the CNM).
