Colorado in Aug/September
Hi all,
We'll be traveling from Pittsburgh to Las Vegas, August through mid Oct., to drop our AS and TV off, then returning in Jan. to pick up from there. WE're wondering, while in Colorado, is it more rewarding to go Denver to Grand Junction along 70, or to drop down to Colorado Springs and take 50 across? Afterward we'll be stopping in Arches, Moab, Canyonlands, then to Bryce, Zion etc.
Any suggestions are appreciated as it seems overwhelming to narrow down.

If you need to make time 70 is likely the best bet. BUT if you got time to slow down a bit the secondary roads are always worth the effort. Take the time if you can but it's a spectacular ride either way. Just beware of the downhill grades they can sneak up on you.

I would go further south to 160 and head west thru Alamosa, Del Norte, Pagosa Springs, Durango stay on 160 until you reach 89, then head toward St. George, Utah on 9. A short drive from there to LV.

Depends on what you want to see...but since you want to do Moab and the Utah Big 5 SP's, and assuming you have the time, do I-70. It's a beautiful route as long as you miss the weekend exodus out of Denver. There are some nice stops along that route, and it is an amazing cut through the mountains. Plus you can hit Colorado NM in Grand Junction and 128 down to Moab is very scenic. I could spend a month between Denver and Vegas!

The weekend exodus and return is EVERY weekend on I-70 between Vail and Denver. Doesn't seem to matter what the season is. If you route is Denver, Moab, Bryce routing might as well stay on I-70. Just hit it during a week day if you can.

We will have about a month to spend in Colorado. If that spurs any more thought we certainly will appreciate it.

Stay somewhere around Mancos, CO. Easy day trips to all areas in SW CO. Even to Moab.
The train ride from Durango to Silverton is a great day trip.
The drive north on Hwy 550 to Ouray and beyond to Ridgway the SW over Lizard Head pass thru Rico and Dolores is another fantastic drive.
Not to mention Mesa Verde NP.
