Coffee?
Missoula Montana has the best coffee period! However when I sit in the comforts of my home with my high end coffee machine life is good. When I'm hooked up to my "genny" or "shore power"...my little electric drip coffee maker is good. But when I'm overnighting and none of those devices are available what's the consensus?
So "community" what's the best device when all you've got is "hot water" and "ground beans"? I've tried "french presses" there ok but are there better devices out there?
Thanks for your participation.

Here's a method... 😂
Truth be told - French Press with the right coffee is fantastic. We're fans of either Community or CDM chicory coffee from NOLA.

10 cup stove top percolator. French Market coffee with chicory. Bring to boil, reduce heat to gentle bubble, time for 4 minutes. Remove from heat. Wait 5 minutes and pour. Very simple.

Ground coffee in Melitta filters in a filter holder with boiling water poured over the coffee. We do it whether we are hooked up to shore power or not.
Our nearly antique holder is for the #4 filters, but here is a #6-filter version:

YES - it starts the day. No power, we'll find a way.
Starbucks Verona is the deal. Brew it strong and dilute to appeal.
Best with a scone, muffin, or cake to be alert. Save the pie for desert.
Travel with your coffee. Oh, yeh, you'll see. Pat

Starbuck's Verona used to be my favorite, but now I prefer Peet's Major Dickason's Blend. Pour over into a thermos while on the road. Moccamaster at home.

Peet's Major D is our coffee of choice as well.
We have a coleman automatic propane coffee maker that utilizes one of the little canisters, we have the drip maker as well in the trailer but that slow drip coleman makes one fantastic coffee.
This is the one -

At home we have a Ninja Coffee Bar.

We prefer not to camp with anything glass if we can avoid it. Too many rough roads. We also have limited space for appliances. Our solution is to boil water on the stove in a small tea kettle, then pour it through a low-tech plastic cone and filter into an insulated metal carafe. It works like a thermos. (I. e., your basic drip coffee method.) Sometimes we even make drip coffee in the thermos to take on the road.
We got a nifty collapsible cone from REI that packs into a flat disc, and saves space.
I know many people love and swear by their French presses, but we've not cared for the sludge/grounds at the bottom or glass pots.

The Aeropress gets great reviews. I alternate between the Aeropress and a French press.

Nope. Hot water, drown a couple teabags in a stainless steel vacuum insulated cup. Drink and repeat all day.

Pat,
Ahh yes, Missoula.... Airscape, the BEST place for your beans.
What we use....Sooper brew, and it looks right at home in the AS.

Any kind of instant coffee, even stale, when nothing else is available. Makes a real cup tastes so good when you finally get one.

I agree with those comments above regarding the 10 cup stovetop percolator. Got mine at (stainless) at Cabbalas. One reason I like it is that it is a very safe way to heat water, carry, and pour it for any other needs also.
I use it to make coffee in the perc. I usually line the basket with a standard paper cone filter to reduce the coffee oils and make cleanup easier.
I also have the collapsible cone holder Len and Jeanne mentioned (silicone, got at REI for about $10-15). If I need to make a pot for later, I use that and pour-over directly into a large thermos. This is also handy if you have more than 2 coffee drinkers around. I used this a lot this summer when we had 4 people and the 2 daughters were still asleep in their tent when I was up and making coffee. Because then I can make breakfast and get the cleanup done, and when they wake up there is hot ready coffee in the thermos.
I do think that the perc makes better coffee than the pour over, but both are fine and make very little to clean up.
I have also used a moka on the stove top. It works very well, but takes more monitoring than the perc. And really only makes enough for 1 person.
I also have a french press but don't care for the mess involved when camping.

Melitta 5 cup with a tea kettle to heat the water. The Melitta rides in a roof locker in the box it came in. So far, the glass has survived.

Welcome to the forum Rpatrick16!
FYI this earlier thread has over 100 posts on the subject of coffee makers, brewing techniques, etc.:
http://www.airforums.com/forums/f484...er-132587.html
and the Stella's Kitchen sub-forum contains many similar interesting threads on a variety of cooking topics:
http://www.airforums.com/forums/f484/
including Cast Iron and Fire Cooking, Dutch Oven, and Best Grill topics:
http://www.airforums.com/forums/f484/cast-iron-collection-and-fire-cooking-64047.html
http://www.airforums.com/forums/f484/dutch-oven-cooking-40090.html
http://www.airforums.com/forums/f484...ls-119813.html
With space limited in our FC20, we keep it simple with a teapot to boil water, and brown paper filters in a Melitta drip cone, using the best quality coffee beans, freshly ground. This approach also permits making coffee early in the morning, outside the trailer, using an Iwatani single 15,000 BTU butane burner on the campsite table, with 1/2 and 1/2 etc. from the back-up cooler in the tow vehicle.
Happy Trails!

Thanks to all who helped me. I used my French press when moto camping but as others commented I didn't like the sludge on the bottom.
The little electric coffee maker works well when on shore power, the Ginny, or the 1000 watt inverter. However we are getting ready for our first multi week road trip and we needed something to use for quick overnights or rest stops.
So this is what I ended up with.
The collapsible GSA drip basket from REI. Makes 1-12 cups, uses #4 filters and folds to less than an inch. Several of you all mentioned it. Now I looking for a small tea kettle.
Thanks again for all the help. Should you see a 22FB Sport stopped along the road with the name "Milley" over a Shamrock stop buy and I'll fix you all a cup of coffee.

Not the smallest one made by Revere, but the closed loop handle is easier to use than the 6-cup version IMO. Very durable and fairly light weight. Reliable whistle function which is a must on the road.
