Chicago to Lakewood NJ

Hi All - We will be traveling from Chicago to Lakewood NJ this weekend towing our 16' Bambi then picking up a brand spanking new 25' Flying Cloud on Monday. We are considering I-80 for most of the trip and then dropping down I-76. Doing a round trip in 4 days. Would you stay on I-80 most of the way and then drop on the GSP to Lakewood or take the I-76 route? Looking for someone that may have done this run in the past that might be able to give us some advice. Due to hectic work schedule, we won't have time to camp in either direction, and planning on getting some shut eye in rest areas or truck stops along the way.

80 is a straight shot, and no tolls. 76 is twisty, and an expensive toll road. Having made the drive from Chicago to NJ many times (family), I'd base the decision on .... construction. Check the PA hwy tans site for active construction sites. You can get backed up for hours on 80 if there is a lot of work being done.

I have been on and off 80 in the past few weeks. Nothing really awful to report. Don't forget about Penn Woods AS park outside Clarion Pa. Its just a click south of I80. It would be a great stopping point both directions.
Might be.a good place to stop and play with your new toy.
WalMart and fuel at the Clarion exit.
Happy for you! Safe trip!

I 80 in Ohio is a toll road. It will cost you $30+/- each way.

Don't know your destination, but avoid Philly. My first and last time there was a traffic nightmare. I was on my way to Jersey Shore Haven.

We're local here in NJ and my route of choice would be 80 eastbound and while still in PA drop down on Rt. 33 to 78 E. Good road, toll free. 78 eastbound into NJ ( no toll) and onto 287 S to the Garden State Pky. ( RV trailers are allowed. This is a toll road ) and as a toll free alternative also from 287 you in the same area as the Parkway you can get onto Rt. 9 south and that will also take you to the Lakewood area and Colonial AS. Depending on the time of day Rt. 9 is not bad. Late afternoon rush hour a sure NO-NO. Especially with a trailer following you. Weekend I would advise the Parkway.

Have a good trip.

I make that trip often, agree with Roger, if you have an easy pass type toll gizmo from Il, it will work in Ohio and PA and NJ. Safe Journey, Penn Wood great as are Ohio Turnpike Rv areas.

Just be forewarned. New Jersey put the "T" in traffic. It is unavoidable and just a matter of where you will find it. Or better yet, it will find you. Be patient and be familiar with your route and you will be fine. Many of our roads have the infamous
" Jughandle" where you make your left turns by making a right turn. Any good GPS should pick up on these and take care of you.

Another Jersey type.

80 across Pa. to 33 south at Stroudsburg to 78 east into NJ. About 10 miles in south on 31 at Clinton. 31 south to 295 around Trenton to 195 east. South on 31 watch for a turn off 202/31 at Ringoes. 195 east Lakewood to route 9 south to Lakewood and route 88 east Colonial.

You don't want to be on the NJ Parkway on a weekend.

DO NOT use EasyPass on the way back out of NJ on 78. They will charge you as a truck about 5 times the correct rate,

Howie. I've run into the EZ-Pass issue on Rt. 78, If you use the toll plaza lanes they will charge your EZ-Pass correctly. Do not use the high speed lane that's where they will hit you with the commercial truck rate. I have a dispute going with them right now waiting for resolution.
