Chew Mail Pouch, barns painted by Harley Warrick

Folks,

If you grew up or traveled in the Midwest seeing a Chew Mail Pouch Tobacco Treat Yourself To The Best barn sign on a country road or interstate was a common sight. We'll here's a long multi segment video about the last painter, Harley Warrick. His story is pretty neat and the barn signs which were later no longer permitted but those old Treat Yourself To The Best signs were declared National Landmarks and allowed to be maintained.

Linda and I saw Harley painting some plywood panel signs at Malabar Farm SP in OH early to mid 90's and he chatted and painted by eye those panels and they were later auctioned as a benefit IIRC. He also made bird houses and mailboxes, want one, sign the notebook, when its ready it ships.

Spotting an old Chew Mail Pouch sign and snapping its faded message might make for an interesting chase for some.

Thanks for the info. The Mail Pouch signs are now on Lucy's places to visit list.

And in the southeast, "See Rock City". Seems like "Martha White Flour" signs were all over the south too.

One of my earliest memories of travelling/camping as a kid was at Meramec Caverns. We were on the way to NY to visit relatives east of Erie, PA, then on to Kingston so Dad could get trained on some new mainframe at the IBM plant. We stopped at the Caverns 1st night out. It rained, and rained, and rained. We were in a tent and an Apache fold-out camper. I can STILL smell the aroma of wet, treated canvas!

I've been to Wall Drug with family vacation early 70's. Long way to go for ice water.

Those of you that go on I95 out of NC into SC have endured mile after mile of South of the Border and Pedro. And you can't escape it on the N bound return either.

We have a small artists rendition of a Mail Pouch barn sign painting at home.

But those hand painted barns made it to National Landmark status.

Stopped at Wall Drug last summer enroute to Yellowstone/Tetons. My last visit was in '83. It now resembles a shopping mall more than anything else. As a kid, I remember Mail Pouch, Burma Shave signs. We always read the Burma Shave signs out loud. Whatever happened to "Clabber Girl" --- she was majorly featured for baking powder, right??

Well, if you paint it, they will come.

Here's a Mail Pouch Barnstormers fan club website with info by state and county. It even has GPS info and a pic. So if you are in the area this will make finding a barn a lot easier.

Mail Pouch Barns

I looked at a couple in Wayne County OH and these were off the main road locations.

Fading kinda fast.
