Are you referring to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge or the Chesapeake Bay Tunnel? We did the bridge several times last summer and never had an issue. Either are considered "targets" as far as terrorism goes and are subject to inspections on tanks- but they are much more likely to worry about commercial vehicles than you. Have fun!

I was over the bridge-tunnel bringing home my Bambi about 4 years ago, I was told that they occasionally restrict high profile vehicles during high wind conditions.
p.s. I went to the CBBT website using your link, looks like trailers are restricted when wind speed is over 40 mph. (level 1)

We had no issues when we traveled across the Chesapeake bridge with our Airstream two years ago. Just shut off your tanks and drive on. Say hi to the sea gulls for me.

I was wondering the same thing, but the link was to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (US 13), so I think that's what they want, not the similarly named Bay Bridge near Annapolis, MD that carries US 50 & US 301 over the bay.

I've been over the CBBT several times while towing an Airstream. I was asked once at the toll booth if my tanks were shut off, but have never been checked. It's usually a nice ride, but can get interesting if very windy.
Have a safe trip.

I haven't been over the CBBT, but I've used the I-664 tunnel (or whatever it is for getting to the Outer Banks) in VA in the same area as the CBBT and they have you stop. They sometimes just ask if I have the propane off; other times they ask to check; sometimes they seem surprised that I stopped.

Last summer called the MD SP at the bridge and they told me that you may go through the tunnel w/ up to 100 lbs of propane if shut off and tagged. I don't know what they ACTUALLY do, but this is what the SP told me.

went that way a couple years ago,and back towards i95 which brought me out 50 miles north of richmond virginia.ok ,but lots of lights.i prefer going around washington dc if you can time it right.take 695 east going down to avoid the ft mchenry tunnel.i also missed 695 on my way home one time and went thru the fort mchenry at 4am.i guess i could have been in big trouble, but i would have just plead ignorance.

Propane tanks
Hi, I live in Virginia Beach. Carrying propane is fine, but the tanks are supposed to be turned off. They don't usually check on Rt 13, the Bay Bridge Tunnel, but they do check on I-64 and I-664 which are the Hampton Roads Tunnel and the Monitor-Merrimac Tunnel.
Where you'll get in MAJOR trouble is Baltimore! Take the beltway AROUND the city as they will lock you up and throw away the key for taking anything larger than a can of stove fuel through their I-95 downtown tunnel. There was a terrible explosion of a propane truck in the tunnel - way back in the 60's I believe, hundreds hurt and many killed. The city is still sensitive to that.

Really? I've taken my camper through the tunnels there several times (well, maybe I-895 instead of I-95, but they're right next to each other).

Bridge/tunnel, no problem. But as others have said, they will turn you back under high wind conditions. Oh yah, the toll is based on how many axles you have.

Good point. Sometimes they don't even look. I've been charged for an extra axle twice now, so I let them know it's a single axle trailer first thing, then ask for a receipt.

Been there with 80lb of propane. You have to stop at the checkpoint. They just check to see if the tanks are turned off. No problems.

Yup. Our most recent southbound trip with the rig was in October. No issues, just confirm to the nice lady at the toll booth that the gas is off. (I have two 40-lb tanks).
