Charleston SC campgrounds for December

What is your favorite campground in the Charleston SC area?

I'm looking to go for a week in December.

Hi Paula,

I live here & I like James Island County Park best as it is less than 10 minutes from the beach & historical downtown Charleston. Edisto State Park also nice & right on Edisto Beach but it is about an hour away from downtown.

Happy Trails,
Jane

I agree with the above. I just camped there two weeks ago for the first time and had a great time. As I was arrived in the evening the park was testing it's Christmas lights they put up. The Christmas light's were amazing, and I would camp there again just to see them. The entire park is decorated with some very good quality lights.

Another vote for JICP. Better book early as in right now. Might already be too late.

Yet another vote for James Island - have stayed there tree or four times. So convenient to getting to downtown, yet once in the park all is quiet & peaceful - lots of space, large sites, bike and walking trails, etc. etc

If you want a commercial campground, Oak Plantation is the place to go on the south side of town. The Mt Pleasant KOA is usually the spot for the north side. Both are 15 or so minutes from downtown. JICP is likely to be full for December.

Googling Oak Plantation CG, it looks really lovely.

I like the senior discount at JICP, and they also give 40% off in January and February.

Oak Plantation is on a very busy highway about 10 miles from my house. It is nice but has had some issues with safety & it floods terribly when it rains. Lately you'd need am Airstream boat to get out there.

Happy Trails

James Island County Park - update

Well - They are booked a year in advance for the Christmas season. They book a year in advance to the DAY so if you'd like to go Dec 10 of next year call at 8:30 AM on DEC 10 THIS YEAR.

All together, I'm sure it's a lovely park, especially for families with children and people who are big on Christmas festivals. I was actually taken to see Santa in Cleveland Ohio in the 1950's.... and LMAO on seeing the scene from A Christmas Story "you'll put your eye out kid" .... so it might not be the thing Karen and I would enjoy.

Off to Edisto! Gracias!

Paula

Edisto is an excellent second choice.

NOW I NEED A PLACE TO STOP ALONG THE WAY - at least a 4-6 hour nap, or overnight if I'm really tired. Taking the dreaded I-95 once I'm in NC

Agreed! We were there for a few days in November. Two thoughts: camp in the Beach loop and bring water with you. Great place but the water is barely fit for showering.

Yes, arrive with a full tank of fresh water for drinking, coffee, etc., and use their showers to stretch your water out.

There is a fresh water spigot at City Hall, where you are allowed to fill gallon jugs. Drinking water is also available for purchase at the grocer.

Other than the water....no more beautiful place exists than their beach campground.

In NC, I like Medoc Mountian State Park. About 20 mins off 95.

Recap on the trip - stopped at a Cracker Barrel on the way down - somewhere in NC just off of I-95. Had dinner just before they closed and slept very soundly. Edisto was great - times 2 on bringing in your drinking water; the stuff at the campground was brackish and undrinkable IMHO. It made for very soft water for showering. Sister used the campground showers while I used the trailer's. Only walked on the beach once - spoiled by living in Virginia Beach I guess, but it was lovely. Next time I'll plan to do a lot more cooking, etc. AT the park. Had a great tour of downtown Charleston, but I'd recommend you take the horse tour, not the bus. Much easier to gawk UPWARD and see the taller buildings. It was amazingly crowded for December and daytime temps were in the 70's all but one day.

You should try the Mt Pleasant KOA. Wide grassy, mostly pull thru sites and 13 miles from downtown. I live 3 minutes away and have had occasion to stay there when work on house was needed. The office is open 365 and very helpful. Also it is 1/2 mile from a Super Walmart and numerous restaurants and shopping just down the road @ the Town Center. JICP can be nice but traffic can be a real problem especially in evenings with light show going on.
