Charleston SC Campgrounds

Hello, Any recommendations for a nice campground in close proximity to the Charleston Historic district? James Island County Park looks nice online. Any suggestions from folks that have been there?

Thanks in advance,

Tim

We have not been to James island park but everyone speaks highly of it.

Be sure to drive a bit south to Edisto beach state park.

We stayed at Edisto State Park Campground in May and loved it, although we were in the "overflow" campground. We stayed a week, and on our second day asked to drive through the main campground which is right on the beach, and found quite a few sites open. We were told we could have moved, but my DH didn't want to do the move as we were only staying six more days. (When we made the reservation, there weren't any open in the main campground.)

I realize you said close proximity to Charleston, but the drive is not bad going in. From where we stayed we were somewhat in between Charleston and Savannah, GA, so we also made a day trip to Paul Dean's restaurant in Savannah.

This was our first trip to South Carolina, so we haven't stayed at James Island.

Oak Plantation

Oak Plantation is super nice and roomy. Full hookups, pull through. We stayed there this past may and loved it. Don't remember the cost though. Very convenient to most everything including restaurants and grocery.

Oak Plantation campground is real close to the historic district. It has been in business since the '70's. I have stayed there often.

My wife and I have stayed there as well, and enjoyed the cleanliness and the peaceful setting. It is well maintained, and convenient to all points of interest.

Regards,

James Island is awesome! My son lives on James Island and when we bought our Airstream a month ago we stayed at the campgroud on the way back home. We had a great time and everyone was very nice. Lots to do in the park. They had a triathlon going on that morning which was very cool. Lots of people were racing remote control boats that evening on the lake. Also has a great water park.

We have stayed in both Oak Plantation and JICP , and they are both very nice. However , my vote goes to JICP. Super biking / walking trails (paved), a fishing / crabbing pier, shuttle to the historic district, excellent bath facilities. Enjoy South Carolina, we are glad to have you.
