Central Arkansas

Help me find a decent campground. drove away from two today. Greeter with no teeth, unshaved (ever), walks with a limp suggestive of a third vestigal leg....

Maybe I'm a snob, but I want a pretentious upper tier campground.

for tonight the parking lot of the Cracker Barrel will do.

Conway Arkansas....

A little slice of heaven.

What about (forgive the name) Toad Suck? It has decent reviews and a view of the river.

Queen Wilhelmina State Park

I've seen a couple of pretty good reviews for this state park in Arkansas

Arkansas camping site in Queen Wilhelmina State Park near Mena AR: Queen Wilhelmina State Park Arkansas camping sites, winter rates & reservations

worth looking at if it's not too far from out of your way.

RV Park Reviews :: Conway, Arkansas ( AR ) - RV Parks and Campground Reviews
In addition to Toad Suck, there are several Corps of Engineers camping areas in Central Arkansas. Maumelle Recreation Area and Campground third on this link is very nice. There are also plenty of Corps sites in the rest of the state.

The City of North Little Rock has a nice new RV park on the river across from the Clinton Presidential Library, but it is downtown. It is on a long bike path that is on both sides of the Arkansas River. There is dining and entertainment close. It is different from woods camping though. It belongs to the City and is part of their park system.

There are also a lot of state parks, but most are not in the central Arkansas area. There are is also camping at Hot Springs National Park.

I can vouch for the Maumelle and NLR campgrounds as being nice.

If you want to know more, I'm right here in Little Rock.

Thanks for the responses. I considered state parks but with 1000 degree weather i want my Air Conditioning.

Any that have full hookups? I'm boondocking at the Cracker Barrel now, spraying cool water up into the incoming breeze of the fantastic fan. I have 600 miles to go to get to Texas and don't need to be there til sunday.

Will check this thread in the morning, Goog night all. Me in a wet t-shirt.... whoda thunk it.

Ouch! It's too hot here to be without AC.

Maumelle and NLR both have electric, including even some 50 amp sites.

Further west if you're going that way is Mount Magazine State Park with 18 spaces that have 30 amp and a couple of 50 sites. It also has the advantage of being on top of the higest mountain in Arkansas. It's only 2,753 feet so it's not like the Rockies. I grew up in Paris, at the foot on one of the 2 approaches to Mt. Magazine, and going up on the mountain was very popular in the summer. You might even want to close the windows in the middle of the night. By comparison, the altitude in Conway is 316 feet, so there is a substantial gain.

We camped at the Corps of Engineers Willow Beach (AR), David D Terry Lock campground about 5 miles Southeast of Little Rock last July. It is a great small campground with water & electric and has a paved rode and sites with lots of shade.

Arkansas has a great state park system.

Dardanelles State Park, Petit Jean State Park are but two of many that offer full service sites.

And, you'll find their prices are highway robbery vintage.

You'll find Devil's Den State Park a bit north of the other two, and it too, has the same AAA sites.

Give 'em a try. You won't be disappointed!

Petit Jean is great.

Down on the south side of Lake Quachita there are several nice Corps. of Eng. campgrounds. We like Denby Point.

Cloud Nine

So this morning I woke up at 6:00 ate breakfast and headed out. Internet access sucked so I just figured, well lets try Hot Springs. Found a very nice campground called Cloud Nine, about 10 miles out of Hot Springs.

Two nites for just over $50 with full hookups and a nice view, campground manager Roxanne is very friendly - and they had an ice cream special. I'm just resting, rehydrating and doing laundry.

Thanks for the advice I may look into a state park in the Texarkana area for Thursday.

If you head out toward Mena (west on 270), stop at the Shangri-La Resort and Marine. The little restaurant there has the best home made pies I've ever had. We never go through there without stopping for a cup of coffee and slice of pie.

Cooper Lake State Park, Sulphur Springs

Paula

If you want to invest a couple more hours, look beyond Texarkana to Cooper Lake State Park in Sulphur Springs. Its about 15 miles from the I-30 interchange to the State Park. We were at the South Sulphur Unit on the south side of the lake on May 15 and it was beautiful, lots of trees, nice level concrete pads. There are plenty of tree-shaded campsites which will really be beneficial in this early summer heat. We were in site 15 in Bright Star Camping Area which, while having a nice cleared meadow to the lake, was full sun, but Site 16 which is a back in, was completely shaded.

TPWD: Cooper Lake State Park

Hope you enjoy Texas while you are here.
