Centeral Fl Camp Grounds: Salt Springs

Hello all,

Getting ready to spend a week at Salt Springs national camp ground in the Ocala National Forest, and they have some pretty bad reviews on line. Could be just unhappy campers, but I want to see if anyone on the forums ever stayed there, and what their time was like. Any feed back would be great.

Salt Springs was originally a commercial park so it has full hook-ups, a rarity in NFS facilities. It is run by a concessionaire.

Customer service seems to vary by the hour but is more or less always at least adequate.

It is a beautiful area but on my last visit 2 years ago, it was a black hole to all brands of cellular. Groceries etc. are at least a half hour away.

If swimming, stay in the spring, don't head out into the river as there are lots of gators.

Mike

Thank you!

Thank you, good to know. I hope it works out well. It is full hook up so that was a big selling point. I called and talked with the office manager, and they seemed to have a good outlook. I'll post a follow up with some pics and stuff. Need to check the cell reception, that could kill me.. No games on my phone!!! AHH

About the Gators...

Its not he ones you can see you need to worry about..

We stayed there in february. Nice park full hooks up the spring are in walking distance. Staff was fine. They do have a rule about have any thing on the grass including your stabilizers. No big deal. One of the staffers told us don't even look at the grass. Our Verizon cell was fine. They have free WiFi at the office. We used it with no problem. Nice park have a great stay.

So I figured I would do a quick update/review of the camp ground.

Well this was a very nice National Camp ground, I would say almost as nice as top sail. The sites are a bit small, but they have full hook ups, are paved, level, clean, with table, fire pit and grill. There is no brush or trees between the sites, so you got full view of your neighbors. But otherwise very nice.

Many of the sites are shaded. I used google maps, and was able to pick out one with plenty of shade.

At first I was kind of worried about the reviews online. It appears some folks had problems with the staff. I found most of them were pleasant, not super friendly but ok. I only had one issue during my five days there. We had just got back to the site and the dogs were tied out to get some fresh air. One of the dogs was barking a bit while I was chatting with the neighbor. A camp host pulled up and explained to me the three bark rule. The owner has to stop the dog from barking after three barks. I attempted to apologize, but was quickly shut down. So I Defaulted to my standard response for law enforcement, grumpy old men, and DMV workers, 'Yes sir, I'll take care of that right now.' That seemed to be the answer he was looking for and drove off. So.. there is two main rules to remember, say off the grass (don't even look at it,) and you dog can't bark more than three times. Otherwise all was good with the staff.

Our AS was parked under a tall slash pine tree. The first two mornings a squirrel was dropping half eaten green pine cones on the roof. Boy that was quite a noise! At first I though some one threw a rock and the trailer, but I quickly figured it out and went back to bed. The rest of the morning I had nightmares I was popping roof rivets!

The third day I had enough and called on some of the local boys for help.

The springs were very nice. They are walled off with stairs leading down to the water. There is a great area by the springs for picnicking and grilling out. The sites are under large live oaks. Totally looks like old Fl.

We also went up to SilverGlenn Springs. It was about 12 miles south on HWY 19. It was a very very nice spring, much more natural. Totally worth the drive and day use fee.

I like the 3 bark rule. I wonder what the rules are against outdoor entertainment centers.

Yea it's a good rule, plus my dogs bark is really annoying.. Just wish it was on the list.
I'll have to look at their 45+ rule list, I think there might have been something on there about that. Plus quite time at 10 pm.

Thank you for the review. My sister's family was there when you were. They keep mentioning for us to go there. They really like it a lot. We will try to go soon. The rules are only as good as the enforcing of them. It sounds like they enforce them pretty well.

Could be you were called on the dog rule because your dog was tied out. Someone walking by would think that the dog was tied at all times, so using the bark rule was the easy solution. Also, Marion county or the city of Ocala has an ordinance about no tieing dogs out. The springs might not be in that county, though. Jim
