Camping near Apostle Islands, WI

We are planning a trip to Minneapolis, Apostle Islands, WI, then over to Mackinaw City, MI. Any suggestions on campgrounds? We have 25 ft. airstream. Need water and electric, also have 2 small dogs.

Mackinaw City KOA

About a year and a 1/2 ago, we stayed at the KOA just outside of Mackinaw City and for us, it worked out perfectly. We had bicycles with us and for the 3 days / 2 nights we spent there, we never moved the tow vehicle. The campground had a short trail which connected with a larger trail that allowed us to ride our bikes right into town; total distance was probably less than 2 miles. One day we toured all around the town and visited the Coast Guard ice breaker. The next day we rode into town and then took our bikes on the ferry over to Mackinaw Island and rode the 8 mile loop around the island plus explored the town. Loved every minute of it.

Enjoy your trip!

Scott

There are lots of county campgrounds in the Upper Peninsula of MI, on Lake Superior, as you drive east from Mpls.

Basics only, but beautiful views of the lake. We like.

For Bayfield, Wisconsin we stayed at the Apostle Islands Area Campground and found it to be just fine:

Apostle Islands Area Campground - Bayfield Camping - Bayfield WI Campgrounds - Apostle Islands Camping - Apostle Islands Campground Apostle Islands Area Campground & RV Park

We would add that if you want enjoy a really great meal in a setting that is just as great - then don't pass up the Rittenhouse Inn:

Bayfield Wisconsin (WI) Bed And Breakfast | Old Rittenhouse Inn

We have also stayed at the Apostle Islands Area Campground, and would rate it "OK". We were put off by a lot negative signage--you know, "don't do this", "don't do that", "STOP--THIS MEANS YOU", etc.

If you are willing to camp a few miles down the road in Washburn, WI, there are two city campgrounds that are real gems. Washburn, Wisconsin - On The Shore Of Lake Superior

Both Memorial Park and Thompson's West End Park are right on Lake Superior; Thompson's has both a swimming beach and a boat ramp.

Unless you want the beach or boat ramp, we think Memorial Park is the place to go for smaller rigs. It's heavily wooded and very pretty, and usually less crowded. But it is a little tight for bigger rigs.

Thompson's West End Park has huge sites with big-rig accessible spaces, but not as much shade.

And we have yet to meet a City of Washburn employee who wasn't outstandingly friendly and helpful.

We just booked a stay at Mackinaw Mill Creek campground for this July. We have heard great things about staying there.
