Nice travelogue - I love the Smokies and was glad to see them from your eyes.
Nice house, too.

Nice to see the pictures of the campgrounds!
Kudos klattu!! Very lovely photos and reviews! Here's two from our trip in May Grotto Falls hike (we met the llama train on the trail it was a hoot!!) and a photo of the view from our campsite in Elkmont Riverside CG in the Smokies, its boondocking and you might need some extra levellers, we used 3 bags worth, but we were very happy there and our 28' fit just fine!! I tell you folks there's nothing like sitting by that river with your coffee in the am and just 'watchin the river flow' like old Bob Dylan sang...

Do they have full hook up sites? I would like to visit Elkmont also. Looks like a great place. The website says it is 8 miles from Gatlingburg, is that true? And how are the roads?

Logging Camp
Its basic camping..but oh so worth it!
They do have generator section.
This is place to go for Coleman lanterns and cooking outside.
The creek that you can camp beside is great and splits inside campground.
Saw my first black bear in the creek early one morning fishing.
So quite at night, and dark.
Yes, is close by miles to Gatlinburg, on a very senic road = slow
Close to Cades Cove too.
Many water fall trails in the area too.
Make yourself get up early each morning.

Sure do. Here's a couple of the campsite area. The reservation system describes the sites pretty well. There are still first come first served on the other side of the river (J-loop).
Tammy we camp when its cool so we don't worry about a/c off season like spring or fall. We don't have a generator, so if it were 100 degrees we'd be checking out the campgrounds klattu posted my Yankee blood's not thin enough for 100 neither is my tarheel hubby's for that matter!!

Like most National Park campgrounds there are no hookups at all at Elkmont. The campground sites are a little more spacious with foliage between sites compared to many private grounds. The river splits the campground so it is evident from just about every site. We had a river edge site and the stream noise is soothing. They do have showers, toilets, firewood, minimum sundries and dump station. Yes it is about 8 miles from Gatlingburg and it is paved roads all the way. We had a level site needing no blocks and the four Airstreams I saw in the campground last May looked settled in without a lot of blocking.

Wow they have showers now in Elkmont? Cool-- I'm bummed there weren't any in May!
Yes didn't mean to lead anyone astray, many sites are level, but I was bound and determined to get a site on the water and the only one we could get that weekend was severely sloped--we were there early May before the high season, so they had the J side closed off. Fortunately we had lots of blocks!

Here's a photo of the llama train we passed on the trail. They supply the LeConte Lodge in the Smokies which can only be hiked to. We were told they go up and back twice a day with supplies.

Dolly Llama Parton
Someday want to make that hike up to LeConte.
Very few know about the lodge...well until now.
Think I read horses were tearing up the trail.
Llamas better.
OK....now can anyone ID this TT?
Just outside reservation.
Reall long with two curbside doors.

Sorry I think I screwed up my last post.
It is a Royal Spartanette. I think 35 ft. To me their logo looks more like Mercury.

It is probably a 1951 Spartan Royal Spartanette made by Spartan Aircraft company then owned by Getty Oil Company (J. Paul Getty) in Okahoma.
